The survey, step by step

It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. That way we can focus on what matters to you. The visit normally takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. From the street, a London terrace usually shows only its front slope or parapet, so a visit in Collier Row moves between viewpoints: the pavement, upstairs windows, the loft and any safe spot at the back. If other people live in the building, let us know who can let us into the shared parts.

  1. First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
  4. We also look inside the loft space where it’s safe.
  5. The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Show us where any leaks or stains appear
  • Leave a clear route to the loft
  • Let us know about parking near the property

Drone roof survey in Collier Row: what you get

We fly a sub-250g drone, and we’re a CAA-registered drone operator, with a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. It stays within sight for the whole flight, and well below the 120-metre height limit. Each flight is planned with the site and its surroundings in mind. Before every flight, we check the airspace and the weather. Safety comes first on every visit. We are often asked to look into storm damage on steep or tall roofs and chimney tops in poor condition, across fragile roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and chimney stacks.

London’s roofs are often hard to see from the street: butterfly roofs behind parapets, dormer tops and flat roofs over back additions. Drone photos and thermal images can show parts of a roof that are hard to reach safely. Weather on the day decides whether it goes ahead, in Collier Row as anywhere. Thermal images show surface temperature, not water itself, so findings are checked with moisture readings.

Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

What affects the cost of drone roof surveys

Our packages start from £150, including VAT. The price for your roof depends on:

  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
  • Basic, Standard or Premium
  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own

One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, with VAT included. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

What we need to know

When you call or email, these details help:

  • The property’s address and postcode
  • Dates you’re working to, such as exchange
  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors

Photos help, if you have them. Pictures from the ground or a window are fine. To send them or to book, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

Different roofs, different checks

Ridges and hips

Wind lifts loose ridge and hip tiles. Finding them early keeps them from coming down.

Steep slate and tile slopes

On slate roofs, slipped slates often point to corroded nails. We can see the extent of it from above.

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Collier Row

Is parking a problem for a survey in Collier Row?

Sometimes, yes. Where there are permit zones, a visitor permit or nearby pay-and-display bay works well.

Is my home in Collier Row listed or in a conservation area?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

How many surveys have you done?

Over 5,000 surveys so far, over more than 20 years, and 98% of customers are satisfied.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. Our survey isn’t a structural engineer’s report. We’ll recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only where it’s safe to do so. We inspect everything that’s safely in view: from ground level, from windows and vantage points, from the roof space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.

Will the drone film my neighbours?

Privacy is taken seriously on every flight. The camera is pointed at your roof, not next door. It is worth telling neighbours about the flight.

Are there drone restrictions in central London?

It depends where in central London. Restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs need NATS permission before a flight. Every address is checked first, and fall back on other viewpoints if we cannot fly.

Common roof problems in Collier Row

Walking on some roofs does more harm than good. Older slates and tiles break easily, and fragile sheet roofs are dangerous to walk on. With a drone, the roof is photographed without anyone stepping on it.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Vegetation in valleys and gutters
  • Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
  • Wind damage high on the roof
  • Ridge pieces that have lifted

With Hare Hall about 1.7 miles east, the area around Collier Row has a long history. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey by drone or thermal camera does not touch the roof itself.

Questions to ask before you book

  • How soon the report will arrive
  • What the report includes, and whether it has photographs
  • Whether the loft is part of the inspection
  • Which viewpoints they use to see the roof

What to expect from a roof survey

Drone roof surveys in Collier Row: local notes

Further from the centre, London’s housing takes in interwar semis with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles as well as slate-roofed terraces. Bay roofs, hip ridges and dormers from later loft conversions are the details that set these houses apart. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.

Collier Row is in London, so parking needs planning: let us know about permits, visitor bays or off-street space when booking. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Rise Park Infant School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Why get it checked now?

Faults on high roofs tend to be found late. By then, timbers, ceilings and insulation may be wet. Looking from above picks up the early signs. In a London terrace or conversion, a roof defect rarely stays your problem alone: a blocked parapet gutter or slipped slate can let water into the flat below or the house next door. Finding it early keeps the work smaller.

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. You will know the figure before booking.
