Drone roof surveys in Shirley Oaks

Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Shirley Oaks

From the air, the outer surfaces are clear, but it can’t see under the coverings or into the loft. We check the loft from inside where it’s safe, because the underside tells its own story. Together, the two give a fuller picture. Your report shows the drone photos alongside what we saw in the loft. If there’s no safe loft access, the report says so. We survey chimney stacks, flat roofs on upper floors and tall and steep roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are slates or tiles shifted by high winds and coverings that have slipped high up on the roof.

London airspace is busy and tightly controlled: restriction zones surround Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs have restricted areas of their own. Every address in Shirley Oaks is checked before any drone flight, and permission is never taken for granted.

We write the report in plain English, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photographs show what each point refers to.

Questions from Shirley Oaks

Are there drone restrictions around Shirley Oaks?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour.

Is parking a problem for a survey in Shirley Oaks?

It depends on the street. Where there are permit zones, a visitor permit or nearby pay-and-display bay works well.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Let us know your preferred days as you book.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.

How many surveys have you done?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.

Will you photograph what you find?

Yes, every report has them. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, which makes the report easy to follow.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.

Airspace, weather and Shirley Oaks roofs

Outer London has a good many Victorian and Edwardian terraces with slate roofs, but also a great many interwar semis, frequently with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles. Hips, bay roofs and later loft conversions are typical of those semis, if your home is one of them. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from ground level, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. About 1.8 miles south-east lies Addington Palace, a reminder of how long the area around Shirley Oaks has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Shirley Methodist Church, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view by drone or thermal camera helps. If you run a business near St George's Walk, a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it.

Checking the roof from ground level

Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Do not go up yourself.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date.

What this survey cannot tell you

Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:

  • A structural engineer’s report
  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we’re surveying

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will point you to the right survey before you book. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Large and complex roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Fragile roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Chimney stacks

What we do, step by step

There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we will take it from there. The survey itself takes about 1–2 hours at a typical home, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Many London properties are flats or terraces with no side access, so rear slopes are viewed from windows, the loft or, where a flight is allowed, by drone. Mention any building rules, key holders or managing agents when you book.

  1. We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
  4. Where there’s safe access, we check the loft as well.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Before the survey

  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at

Helping us price your survey

What helps most when you contact us:

  • Where the property is, with the postcode
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
  • Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access

Getting a price is simple: just ring 07833 053749 or email us and give us a few details about the property and we’ll recommend the right survey. The price is agreed up front.

For landlords and managing agents

A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work with less disruption.

Any of our surveys can be booked by landlords, agents and building managers in Shirley Oaks. To discuss a property or a block, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

When to book a survey in Shirley Oaks

Height and steep pitches make close inspection risky. Tall townhouses, blocks of flats and offices are typical. A drone gets close-up views from a safe position on the ground.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Damage after a storm that cannot be seen from below
  • Standing water on a flat roof
  • Loose ridge and hip tiles
  • Hidden gutters full of leaves

As a London address, Shirley Oaks can be tricky for parking: a visitor permit or a nearby bay makes the day easier.

Before you book anyone

  • What follow-up you get after the report
  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
  • How much experience they have with roofs like yours
  • Is VAT included in the price?
