Airspace, weather and Stockwell roofs

Stockwell is about 1 mile from the edge of the flight restriction zone around London Heliport in Battersea. The exact boundary is checked for each address before any flight, and a roof inside it needs permission before we fly. Within a mile and a half or so of Stockwell there are several hotels. For hotels and other commercial buildings, large roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.

Parking in Stockwell, as in most of London, takes a little planning: a visitor permit or a nearby bay makes the day easier, as a space near the door cannot be promised. For an older house near a landmark such as St. Andrew's, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.

Stockwell is about 2 miles south-west of London, in Greater London. Whether the building in Stockwell is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed on a weekday or at the weekend. Across Greater London, we cover Stockwell.

Surveys in SW9, SW4 and SW8 are booked the same way as anywhere else. Streets in the area include Kay Road, West Road and Cato Road. Being close to the A203 and A2217, Stockwell is simple for us to get to for drone roof surveys. Close by, we survey roofs in Little Portugal (1 mile north), Angell Town (1 mile east), North Brixton (1 mile north-east), South Lambeth (1 mile north) and Clapham (1 mile west). Within a short drive, we also cover City of Westminster (3 miles north-west), Marylebone (4 miles north), Kensington (4 miles north-west), St Pancras (4 miles north), Shoreditch (4 miles north-east) and Walthamstow (9 miles north-east).

Landmarks near Stockwell

Drone roof survey in Stockwell

They suit tall buildings, steep or large roofs and roofs that are hard to see from ground level. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or isn’t safe. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. Before the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. We will tell you if another approach would work better. We survey valleys and parapet gutters, chimney stacks and tall and steep roofs, and the problems we are asked to look at most are ponding and splits on a high flat roof and loose ridge and hip tiles.

In London’s terraces and conversions, roofs are packed close together, so privacy and neighbours matter as much as the view. Images are taken to show the roof we are surveying, with care for neighbours’ privacy, in Stockwell as anywhere. Tell us about the building and access when you book. The extra view helps most on steep slopes, tall stacks and rear additions.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

How the survey works

It’s useful to start with what’s prompted the survey: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. That way we can focus on what matters to you. The visit typically takes between one and two hours for most houses; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. In Stockwell, visits are available on weekdays and at weekends. It helps if you can point us to a visitor permit or a nearby bay. Upstairs rooms at the back are useful too, as they frequently give the best view of a rear addition.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we are surveying.
  4. We also look inside the roof space where it’s safe.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Preparing for the visit

Advice

What happens if roof problems are left?

Faults on high roofs tend to be found late. By then, timbers, ceilings and insulation may be wet. Looking from above picks up the early signs. Any roof job in Stockwell means planning around parking, neighbours and access. Knowing what’s needed early gives you time to plan it calmly, rather than in a rush after a leak.

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, from £400 including VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you’d like to know.

Why book with us

  • Drones and thermal imaging where applicable
  • CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID)
  • PI and public liability insurance
  • 98% customer satisfaction

Common questions in Stockwell

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Stockwell?

Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Stockwell is about 1 mile from the edge of the flight restriction zone around London Heliport in Battersea. The exact boundary is checked for each address before any flight, and a roof inside it needs permission before we fly. Across London there are restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, plus restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in Stockwell?

Typically it’s manageable with a little notice. Let us know what parking is available nearby, and the visit is planned around it.

Is this an asbestos survey?

No. Asbestos surveys and testing aren’t part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only when it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where it applies, a drone, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days as you book.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is frequently shared, so the building owner or managing agent needs to agree access. We inspect only the parts we’re allowed to reach.

Are you insured?

Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.

How we price drone roof surveys

Not every roof costs the same to survey, for these reasons:

  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own

There are three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Booking your survey

When you call or email, these details help:

  • The reason for the survey, like buying, a leak or storm damage
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • How the loft is reached, if there is one
  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window

Getting a price is simple: just phone 07833 053749 or send us an email, let us know about the property and we’ll recommend the right survey. We confirm the price before anything is booked.

Can I check my roof myself?

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

Signs you need a drone roof survey in Stockwell

Not every roof can take a person’s weight. Old slates and clay tiles crack underfoot, and fragile sheet roofs are dangerous to walk on. A drone lets us see them closely without touching them.

A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:

  • Slates or tiles shifted by high winds
  • Chimney tops in poor condition
  • Slipped or missing slates on a high roof
  • Loose ridge and hip tiles

Carlyle's House lies about 2.4 miles north-west, so building around Stockwell goes back a long way. A drone or thermal survey doesn’t involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
  • Their insurance cover
  • Whether VAT is in the quoted price
  • When you’ll get the report

What a good roof survey covers

What we look for on each type of roof

Large commercial roofs

Older cement sheet roofs may contain asbestos. We do not test for it, but we flag it so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check.

Ridges and hips

Some ridges are fixed with mortar, others with dry-fix systems. Their condition is noted in the report.
