Drone roof surveys in The City: local notes
Thatch survives on some older buildings in Buckinghamshire’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail. West Wycombe Park House, about 2.7 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around The City. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of St Paul, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Radnage Church of England Primary School, big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.
The City is about 5 miles north-west of High Wycombe, in Buckinghamshire. Roofs in The City get the same thorough look as anywhere else in Buckinghamshire. Our Buckinghamshire coverage includes The City and the places around it. For surveys nearby, see our Reading page.

About our drone roof survey in The City
Before any flight, we check the airspace. Near protected airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, flight restriction zones mean permission is needed first. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If we cannot fly, we use other safe vantage points instead and tell you. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. If you are worried about cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below and ridge and hip pieces working loose, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Villages like The City often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photos show what each point refers to, and recommendations are put with the most urgent first where relevant.

The City questions
How do I find out if my home in The City is listed?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Will you come out to The City?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.
What do I do with the report?
The report arrives by email, with photos and clear recommendations. With Standard there’s a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation.
Is your drone operator registered?
Yes. Our registration covers a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. We use a sub-250g drone.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes, every report has them. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible, so you can see what we mean.
How quickly is the report sent?
It depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. The report is emailed to you.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. We’re roof surveyors, not structural engineers. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we’ll recommend one.
Roof by roof
Chimney stacks
The drone shows the outside of the stack, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. If the flue needs a specialist, we’ll tell you.
Ridges and hips
Ridges and hips are the most exposed parts of a pitched roof. From above, we can see loose ridges and missing mortar.
Tips from our surveys
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out:
- Let us know about any leaks or concerns
- Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
- Expect us to rearrange if it’s too windy or wet
- Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
The Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation to talk through the photos and findings. It is a chance to ask about anything in the report.
Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, especially in autumn. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Many leaks start with a blocked outlet.
What happens on the day
After the inspection, everything we found is written up in a report with photos, sent to you by email. As for time on site, most surveys take an hour or two at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Somewhere as small as The City, access is frequently the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
- Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
- Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
- The sub-250g drone takes close-up photos of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
- You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
Getting a price
We confirm the price for your roof before you book, so you know where you stand. Our price is from £400, including VAT. To book, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Why it is worth a survey now in The City
Leaving a slipped slate or a blocked valley can turn a small fault into a leak. Spotting them early keeps the work smaller, whatever height the roof is. Outbuildings and barns around The City are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. It’s worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.
Price depends partly on the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all with VAT included. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.
Why choose Independent Roof Survey in The City

What a drone roof survey does not cover
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:
- Structural calculations (that is a structural engineer’s job)
- Close-up photos of next door’s property
- Flights in a restricted zone without permission
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

DIY checks: what’s safe
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.
