Tips from our surveys

Getting the most from a drone roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Tips:

  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
  • Allow time for permission if you are in a flight restriction zone
  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit
  • Allow for a change of day in poor weather

The Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation to talk through the photographs and findings. It’s a chance to ask about anything in the report.

Have high or hard-to-reach roofs surveyed every few years. Regular photos make changes easy to spot, so small faults are dealt with early.

Drone roof survey in Tisman's Common

Every flight starts with an airspace check. Near protected airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton, flight restriction zones mean permission is needed first. Central London has restricted areas of its own, which need NATS permission. If we cannot fly, we use other safe vantage points instead and tell you. Prison sites also have drone restriction zones. If you’ve noticed moss building up on slopes and in gutters and outlets choked with leaves and silt, we can find out what’s behind it.

Some older homes in villages like Tisman's Common are listed or in a conservation area. A look by drone or thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

Report times depend on the survey you book: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Faults on high roofs tend to be found late. By then, timbers, ceilings and insulation may be wet. Looking from above picks up the early signs. Around Tisman's Common, older homes often have old roof timbers, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it is left.

A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package you pick makes a difference too. The price is always agreed first.

Why us?

  • We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
  • Thermal imaging and drones used where they help
  • Over 5,000 surveys carried out
  • Package prices that include VAT

Can I check my roof myself?

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.

Drone roof surveys in Tisman's Common: local notes

Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent. Older houses across Sussex frequently have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

If your house is among the older ones in the streets near St John the Baptist, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. Anyone responsible for a site like Pennthorpe School will know that a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Common questions in Tisman's Common

Do you cover smaller places like Tisman's Common?

Yes, we do. Our area covers London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Is my home in Tisman's Common listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Will the drone film my neighbours?

The camera stays on your roof, not on neighbouring gardens or windows. We only survey what the owner has asked us to. If your roof is shared, it helps to tell your neighbours about the visit.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

Someone needs to let us in if we’re looking inside or in the loft. We’ll talk about access as you book.

When does the report arrive?

Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. Each one is emailed.

Does the weather affect a drone survey?

We do not fly in strong wind or a downpour. The weather on the day decides whether the drone goes up. If we cannot fly, we will arrange another day.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.

What this survey cannot tell you

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey cannot cover:

  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • A structural engineer’s report
  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll point you to the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.

Roofs we survey in Tisman's Common

  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Chimney stacks
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Fragile roofs

What happens on the day

Every roof is different; as a rough guide, the survey takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. You are welcome to ask questions while we’re there. For a village or hamlet like Tisman's Common, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is checked, with permission requested if required.
  3. We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
