How a drone roof survey works in Tudeley
The weather decides whether a drone can fly. Strong wind or heavy rain rules out a flight, because control and safety come first. If the day turns out unsuitable, we’ll talk about another date or inspect what we can by other means. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. A short delay is better than a rushed flight. We survey flat roofs on upper floors, chimney stacks and valleys and parapet gutters, and people most frequently book us about moss building up on slopes and in gutters and wind damage high on the roof.
In a small place like Tudeley, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photographs show what each point refers to, and recommendations are put with the most urgent first where relevant.

Checking the roof from ground level
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
How the survey works
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement. The whole visit normally takes roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Rural addresses near Tudeley can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
- We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
- The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
- Where there’s safe access, we check the loft as well.
- Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.
Preparing for the visit
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Jot down any questions you want answered

Different roofs, different checks
Ridges and hips
Ridges and hips are the most exposed parts of a pitched roof. From above, we can see loose ridges and missing mortar.
Steep slate and tile slopes
On slate roofs, slipped slates frequently point to corroded nails. We can see the extent of it from above.
Landlords, agents and block managers in Tudeley
Letting agents frequently book on a landlord’s behalf, and the report can go to both. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.
A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work with less disruption.
Questions from Tudeley
Is drone flying allowed in Tudeley?
Normally it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
Will you come out to Tudeley?
Yes, Tudeley is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Can you survey in bad weather?
Light rain is normally fine; heavy rain and wind are different. Strong wind or heavy rain can make access unsafe and ground a drone, so we’d move the date with you.
Do I need to be at home?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
What does a roof survey cost?
Prices start from £400, including VAT. Our Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all including VAT.
Do you take photos of the roof?
Yes. The report includes photographs of what we found, so you can see each point for yourself.
How soon will I get the report?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed.
What affects the cost of drone roof surveys
Prices always include VAT. What changes the price is:
- The roof’s overall size
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
- How many separate roofs there are, like extensions, dormers and garages
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before you book.
Helping us price your survey
If you can, have these to hand when you get in touch:
- The style of property, from a terrace to a block
- Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
- The property’s address and postcode
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window
Our price is from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, so ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the details.
What this survey cannot tell you
Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Bear these in mind:
- Flights in high wind or heavy rain
- Roofs and gardens beyond the one we are surveying
- The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will tell you. The full list of what we check.

Airspace, weather and Tudeley roofs
Older houses across Kent often have handmade clay or peg tiles, and many have tile-hung walls. Kent’s older buildings take in oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses as well. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of All Saints, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps. Take a building like The Schools at Somerhill: big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.
