Drone roof survey in Whitwell: what you get
We fly a sub-250g drone, and we are a CAA-registered drone operator, with a Flyer ID and an Operator ID. We keep it in sight throughout, and well below the 120-metre height limit. Every flight is planned around the roof, the site and the people nearby. Airspace and weather are checked before every flight. We never fly where it isn’t safe. If you are worried about wind damage high on the roof and blistered or cracked flat roof coverings, we can find out what’s behind it, on chimney stacks, large and complex roofs and tall and steep roofs alike.
In a village or hamlet like Whitwell, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Practical tips
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:
- Check the loft can be reached
- Make sure there’s room outside for the drone to take off
- Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
- Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
We email the report to you, including the close-up photos taken by the drone. Each finding is explained in plain words, and recommendations are ranked by urgency where that helps.
Do not block the vents at the eaves. Poor airflow lets condensation build up. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.
Whitwell questions
How do I find out if my home in Whitwell is listed?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Is Whitwell within the area you cover?
Yes, Whitwell is covered. We survey roofs across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.
Will the drone show what’s under the tiles?
No. The drone photographs the outer surfaces, but not the loft or the underside. Where there’s safe access, we check the loft space from inside.
Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?
We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days when you book.
How long will you be at the property?
The visit usually takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. We’ll give you an idea of timing as you book.
Do drone rules differ in central London?
Some areas need permission from NATS before any flight. Where we cannot fly, we use other safe vantage points.
What happens next?
The report arrives by email. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
Checking the roof from ground level
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
What a drone roof survey doesn’t cover
This isn’t a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
- A flight on a day when the weather is not safe
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What we check
- Large and complex roofs
- Fragile roofs
- Tall and steep roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Chimney stacks
- Flat roofs on upper floors
Drones, thermal imaging and Whitwell roofs
Whitwell lies within about 1 mile of the sea, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain. The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.
Anyone responsible for a site like Niton Primary School will know that a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. If you live in an older home near Church of St. Mary and St. Radegund, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image. Sheat Manor lies about 4.4 miles north, so building around Whitwell goes back a long way. For older roofs nearby, a look from above or with a thermal imager is a hands-off way to check condition.
Whitwell is about 7 miles south of Newport, in the Isle of Wight. We cover Whitwell and the rest of the Isle of Wight, as part of our work across London and South East England. Our area takes in places right across the Isle of Wight. Portsmouth is in our area too.

Remote addresses need a little more planning, so please mention your location when you phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.

How the survey works
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey normally takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Cottages and farmhouses around Whitwell frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.
- We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
- A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
- The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
- If the loft can be reached safely, it is checked too.
- The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey
- Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of

Chimney stacks
The drone shows the outside of the stack, and it is not a flue or gas safety check. If the flue needs a specialist, we will tell you.
Ridges and hips
Some ridges are fixed with mortar, others with dry-fix systems. We record what we see of their condition.
