How electronic leak detection works in Wimbledon
ELD can be carried out in more than one way. Low-voltage methods usually need a wet roof surface, while high-voltage testing needs a dry, exposed membrane. Which one suits depends on the membrane and the layers of the roof and we explain which we’ll use. If neither method suits your roof, we’ll tell you at the outset. If you’ve noticed leaks that return after repairs and leaks through a covered membrane, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Commercial and residential blocks across London often have big flat roofs with plant, rooflights and access walkways. Every penetration and upstand is a place where a membrane can fail. In Wimbledon, roof access is agreed with the building manager or owner beforehand. Plant bases, rooflights and cable entries are all places where water can get in.
The report records the flat roof membrane as we found it on the day. It is useful straight away, and a good reference for later.

What happens on the day
The aim of the visit is simple: to see as much of the flat roof membrane as can be seen safely and record it clearly. Notes and photos go into the written report. The visit usually takes a length of time set by the membrane area and the build-up, which we set out in the quote. In Wimbledon, visits are available on weekdays and at weekends. London parking is often by permit or pay-and-display, so it helps to know what’s near you. Upstairs rooms at the back are useful too, as they often give the best view of a rear addition.
- First, we confirm which roof areas are included.

Advice
Tips from our surveys
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:
- Note where leaks show inside and when
- Keep outlets clear of debris
- Find the breach before more patching
- Let us know about the membrane and build-up if you know it
Wet insulation may need attention after a leak. Your roofer can advise on that, and moisture readings can help.
Clear flat roof outlets regularly. Standing water puts more pressure on any weak point.

What this survey cannot tell you
It is a careful look at the flat roof membrane, not the whole story. The main limits are:
- Leaks from walls, copings or rooflights
- Some conductive membranes
- Fixing the holes we find
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll suggest the right survey before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

FAQs for Wimbledon
Can parking be tricky for a visit in Wimbledon?
Sometimes, yes. Where there are permit zones, a visitor permit or nearby pay-and-display bay works well.
Is Wimbledon in the area you cover?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and Wimbledon is part of that. You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and a few details, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.
How quickly is the report sent?
That depends on the survey you book: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. Reports are sent by email.
Does someone need to be in?
It depends on what we need to see. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in.
What’s in the report?
It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, backed by photos. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too.
What is electronic leak detection?
ELD passes a small electrical current across the roof to locate holes in the membrane. The current only gets through where the membrane is breached so we can pinpoint it.
Will I get photos?
Yes. Photographs are part of every report, so you can see each point for yourself.
What a survey costs
To price your survey, we look at:
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
- Roof area
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
All our prices include VAT. Electronic leak detection is quoted for your roof, because the method depends on the roof. We confirm the price for your survey before booking.
What to let us know when you contact us
The more you let us know, the easier it is to price the survey. When you get in touch, it helps to mention:
- When you need the report by
- Anything about access we should know
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
A quick phone call is typically the easiest start: phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will ask a few questions about the roof. You’ll have a price before anything is arranged.
What happens if roof problems are left?
A visual inspection can miss tiny holes. ELD picks up breaches a visual check might miss, on suitable membranes. Work on a London roof is rarely simple to arrange, with parking, neighbours and access all to think about. That’s a good reason to find problems early, while there is time to plan.
What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how it can be reached and seen safely. We quote electronic leak detection for each roof, as the method and time depend on the roof.
Why book with us
- Two decades and more of roof surveys
- Drones and thermal imaging where applicable

Flat roofs in Wimbledon
Alongside Victorian and Edwardian terraces, outer London has a great many interwar semis, frequently with hipped roofs of clay or concrete tiles. Bay roofs, hip ridges and dormers from later loft conversions are the details that set these houses apart. Mixed in with those pitched roofs are lots of flat ones, over rear extensions, dormers, garages and shops. Historic houses such as Southside House, about 1.1 miles south-west, show how far back building in the area around Wimbledon goes. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs.
If you run a business near Southside Wandsworth, a flat roof over a business is out of sight and out of mind until it leaks. Landlords with a home close to Wimbledon station may find that flat roofs on let property tend to be checked only when they fail, which is the costly way round. Wimbledon is in London, so parking needs planning: tell us about permits, visitor bays or off-street space when booking, as a space near the door can’t be promised.

What we look for on each type of roof
Single-ply membranes
Some single-ply membranes suit electronic testing well but it depends on the product and layers.
Liquid-applied waterproofing
Small holes in liquid waterproofing may leak. Where the roof suits it, testing can find them.
