How we price roof surveys

To price your survey, we check:

  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
  • House, block, shop or office
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
  • Which survey package you book

For a price for your roof in Wimbledon, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and let us know about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.

What we need to know

When you call or email, these details help:

  • The type of building and roof, like pitched or flat
  • Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside

Every survey is priced before it is booked, so you know the cost up front. Prices start from £150, including VAT. For a price for your roof, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

Roof surveys for homes and businesses in Wimbledon

People book a roof survey for all sorts of reasons. Some have spotted a stain or a slipped slate, others want a check before selling or after years without one. The approach is the same in each case: we inspect carefully and explain what we see in writing. We survey on weekdays and at weekends, so finding a time is rarely difficult. Common reasons to book are valley linings that have cracked or split and lifted, split or missing lead flashings, across the roof space, lead flashings and ridges, hips and valleys.

Victorian and Edwardian terraces are found right across London, many with Welsh slate roofs, shared chimney stacks and parapet or valley gutters. Slates can last a century or more, but the nails holding them corrode, and slates slip. In Wimbledon, as across London, that is why a roof needs a close look rather than a glance from the street. Shared chimney stacks and the lead around them are just as important to check.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Wimbledon

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work.

With a portfolio of properties, you can book surveys for several addresses. To arrange surveys for several addresses, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the addresses.

The survey, step by step

Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. The whole visit usually takes between one and two hours for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. In converted houses and mansion blocks, the loft hatch is often on a shared landing. If that applies to your building, it helps to agree access with the neighbours or the managing agent first. Everything else is planned around the building, not the postcode.

  1. You let us know the address, the type of roof and what’s worrying you.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
  3. Outside, we inspect from the ground, windows and other safe vantage points, and from the roof where safe.
  4. We then look in the loft for damp, staining and the condition of the underlay.
  5. We email a report with photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know about parking near the property
  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

Practical tips

Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:

  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch
  • Include dormers, porches and garages as you book
  • Watch for slipped slates after bad weather
  • Photograph stains when they appear

Premium comes with a follow-up after 12 months. It shows how the roof has fared over the year.

Do not block the vents at the eaves. Condensation builds up when air cannot move, and it can wet timbers and insulation. Keep insulation clear of eaves vents.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

What this survey can’t tell you

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:

  • Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • How the roof will behave in every kind of weather

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you. The full list of what we check.

If the drone is used for your survey, we check the exact boundary for the address before flying. Outer London has a good many Victorian and Edwardian terraces with slate roofs, but also a great many interwar semis, often with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles. Bay roofs, hip ridges and dormers from later loft conversions are the details that set these houses apart. Whatever the covering, it is often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.
