Before and after the survey

You do not need to be a roofer to help. Here’s what helps most:

  • Note any new marks on ceilings beneath the roof
  • Clear roof outlets and gutters each autumn
  • Have the roof looked at again after a severe storm
  • Limit foot traffic on the covering

If anything in the report isn’t clear, just ask us. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one, so you can talk the findings through.

Check the roof from a window after a downpour. Water still lying a day or two later is worth getting looked at.

Flat roof survey in Crookham Village: what you get

Flat roofs deal with rain in a very different way from pitched ones. Because rain sits on it for longer, a small split, an open seam or a blocked outlet matters more. The surface, the falls, the upstands and the trims are all looked at closely, and we note any sign that the deck below has got wet. The aim is to find problems before they show up as a stain on a ceiling. We are frequently asked to look into outlets that hold water back and water getting in at rooflights, on single-ply membranes, mastic asphalt and felt flat roofs.

In a small place like Crookham Village, a flat roof can stand in the open, so edges, upstands and laps take a beating. Older felt roofs, often around 15–20 years in life, show it first. Rubber and GRP last longer, though trims and joints still need a look. On an exposed roof, the edges tend to go first.

Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Can I check my roof myself?

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Flat roofs in Crookham Village

A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Older houses in the South East frequently have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Flat roofs fill the gaps in between, on extensions, garages, dormers and business premises. The wider area around Crookham Village has a long history of building, with Farnham Castle about 4.5 miles south-east. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near All Saints' Church, any flat roof added at the back or on a dormer is likely to be far younger, and less durable, than the main roof. Anyone responsible for a site like All Saints Church of England Aided Junior School will know that large flat roofs, common on schools and other public buildings, need their outlets, upstands and coverings checked regularly. For businesses in and around places such as Hart Shopping Centre, outlets and upstands on commercial flat roofs are the places to check before trouble starts.

How it works

After the inspection, everything we found is written up in a report with photographs. As for time on site, it usually takes about 1–2 hours for a small flat roof at home, and longer for a large commercial one. Somewhere like Crookham Village needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it is safe.

  1. We agree the roof to be surveyed, its use and any leaks you know about.
  2. We check the roof from the ground, windows and the roof where it’s safe.
  3. We check the covering for splits, blisters, ponding and wear.
  4. We photograph and record the outlets, upstands, trims and rooflights.
  5. The report, with photographs and recommendations, comes to you by email.

Before we arrive

  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

What happens if roof problems are left?

A small split in a flat roof is usually a modest job when it is found early. Leave it, and water can get into the insulation and deck, which can turn a patch into a replacement. Surveying it now tells you where you stand. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.

Flat roof survey starts from £150, including VAT. The final price depends on the size and height of the roof, how it can safely be seen and which survey you book.

Why us?

  • Thermal imaging and drones used where they help
  • Professional indemnity and public liability insurance
  • Plain-English reports with photos
  • Package prices that include VAT

Take a look at how roof surveys are priced and two real surveys.

What a survey costs

When we price a survey, we consider:

  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
  • The roof’s overall size
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. You will know the figure before booking.

What to let us know when you contact us

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
  • Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors

Getting a price is simple: just ring 07833 053749 or email us, let us know about the property and we’ll explain which survey suits. The price is agreed up front.

Crookham Village: your questions answered

How do I find out if my home in Crookham Village is listed?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Will you come out to Crookham Village?

Yes. Crookham Village is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We check the parts we are given access to.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.

What happens next?

You’ll get the report by email. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.

What will the report tell me?

It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, backed by photos. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too, so you know exactly what was covered.

How much is a survey?

Our price is from £150, including VAT. You will know the exact price before booking, based on the roof’s size, access and package. For a price, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

Different roofs, different checks

EPDM rubber

A rubber roof can last 30 to 50 years, provided its details were done well. Those details are where we focus.

GRP fibreglass

Movement in the deck or a thin layer of resin can lead to cracks in GRP. We record any cracking and any signs of the deck moving.
