Flat roof surveys for homes and businesses in Kensal Green
Each flat roof is looked at from the safest viewpoints we have: from the roof itself where that is safe, from windows and nearby vantage points, and from inside where there’s access. We don’t walk on fragile rooflights or fragile roof sheeting. If part of the roof cannot be seen or reached safely, the report says so, so you know exactly what was covered. We survey mastic asphalt, felt flat roofs and GRP fibreglass, and the problems we are asked to look at most are dips that suggest the deck is deflecting and damaged trims at the roof edge.
On a London roof terrace or a flat roof over a back addition, water often runs under the covering before it shows. Outlets, upstands against parapet walls and joins with the main roof are frequent culprits. In a block or conversion in Kensal Green, the flat roof is often a shared part of the building.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Tips from our surveys
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:
- File the paperwork for the roof and any repairs
- Watch the ceilings below the flat roof for stains
- Ask whoever fits equipment on the roof to make good the covering
- Note where water lies after a downpour
If anything in the report isn’t clear, just ask us. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, giving you a chance to go through what we found.
Have the roof surveyed every few years, and after any work that goes through it. That catches changes early and builds up a record of the roof.
How the survey works
The aim of the visit is simple: to see as much of the flat roof as can be seen safely and record it clearly. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit normally takes between one and two hours at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. In a London conversion, the way into the loft space is often from a communal landing or the top flat. Where that’s the case, access needs agreeing with whoever controls that landing. Everything else is planned around the building, not the postcode.
- You send us the address and, for commercial roofs, an idea of the roof’s size.
- We check the rooms or spaces under the roof for staining where there’s access.
- We view the roof from safe positions and never walk on fragile surfaces.
- We record every defect with a photo and its likely cause.
- You get a report setting out the condition and our recommendations, in order of urgency.
Getting ready for the survey
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- Leave a clear route to the loft

Advice
Common questions in Kensal Green
Can you look at the flat roof of a hotel or office near Kensal Green?
Yes. As well as homes, we look at flat roofs on offices, hotels, blocks of flats and commercial units. Larger commercial roofs are quoted for the building, and roof access is agreed with you ahead of the visit.
Can parking be tricky for a visit in Kensal Green?
Sometimes, yes. If Kensal Green has controlled parking where you are, a visitor permit is the easiest answer.
Do I need to be at home?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you when booking.
How experienced are you?
We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, and 98% of customers are satisfied.
Do you use drones?
Where it is applicable and safe, yes. We are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. It’s included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where applicable, the Premium Survey.
Do you look in the loft space?
Where it’s relevant to the survey and there’s safe access, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch, and if the loft can’t be reached safely, the report says so.
How much does a flat roof survey cost in Kensal Green?
Prices start from £150, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on its size, height, access and the package, and it is agreed before booking.
When you need someone else
No survey can tell you everything, and it is better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:
- Whether the deck or joists are strong enough
- What’s under the membrane without opening it up
- Testing older roof sheets for asbestos
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll recommend the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.

Flat roofs in Kensal Green
Close to the centre of London, a great many houses are Victorian or Edwardian terraces, many of them roofed in Welsh slate. A butterfly roof with a central valley gutter, tucked behind a parapet wall, is common on these houses. Lead flashings, party-wall upstands and shared chimney stacks are typical of these houses, if yours is one of them. Next to the main roofs there’s normally a flat roof somewhere, whether on an extension, a garage or a commercial unit. Within a mile and a half or so of Kensal Green there are several hotels, and hotels, like offices and blocks of flats, often have flat roofs. For hotels and other commercial buildings, finding the cause of a flat roof leak quickly keeps rooms in use.
For hotels and guest houses around Kensal Green, a roof problem found early is far less disruptive than one found by a guest, so it is worth knowing the roof’s condition. Landlords with a home close to Kensal Green station may find that flat roofs on let property tend to be checked only when they fail, which is the costly way round.

Do you need a flat roof survey in Kensal Green?
A flat roof lies open to sun, rain and frost, and water drains off it slowly. Over the years, coverings harden, crack and start to come away at the edges. Most people book a survey after a leak, before buying, or when they think the roof is getting old.
We are frequently asked to look at:
- Outlets choked with leaves and silt
- Failed upstands where the roof meets a wall
- Pools of water lying on the roof
- Water getting in at rooflights
The streets around a church like St Martin are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, any flat roof added at the back or on a dormer is likely to be far younger, and less durable, than the main roof.
Questions to ask before you book
- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
- Their insurance cover
- How much experience they have with roofs like yours
Can I check my roof myself?
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That is where a survey comes in.

Different roofs, different checks
Felt and built-up roofs
Built-up felt is one of the most common flat roof coverings on extensions, garages and dormers. We look for blistering, cracking, split laps and worn mineral surfacing.
Mastic asphalt
Asphalt roofs are common on older flats, walkways and commercial buildings. The survey checks for crazing, cracking, blistering and splits where the asphalt turns up the walls.
