Chaddleworth questions
Is my home in Chaddleworth listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Is Chaddleworth in the area you cover?
Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, and Chaddleworth is part of that. You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and some details.
Is there a good time of year to book a gutter survey?
You can book at any time of year. Booking before autumn and winter gives you time to plan, and a wet spell can show where gutters overflow.
What’s in the report?
A written report with photos, explaining the condition of the gutter, any defects and our recommendations. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.
How long will you be on site?
A visit usually takes an hour or two at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. You’ll know roughly how long when we arrange the visit.
Do you survey at weekends?
Yes, we carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays as well as weekdays. To book, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
Will you go up on the roof?
Not always. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where applicable let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.
Gutter survey in Chaddleworth
We carry out gutter surveys in Chaddleworth as part of our cover across London and South East England. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, from ground level, from windows and from the loft space. A visit normally takes an hour or two for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. The written report follows, with photographs and recommendations. We are often asked to look into fascia boards damaged by overflowing water and hoppers and outlets full of debris, across valley gutters, downpipes and parapet and box gutters.
Somewhere as small as Chaddleworth, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs frequently need the most attention.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photographs, sent by email. It explains the condition of the gutter, the defects we found and what we recommend.

What you can safely check yourself
A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
The survey, step by step
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof; as a rough guide, the survey takes an hour or two for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. You are welcome to ask questions while we’re there. For a village or hamlet like Chaddleworth, the journey is planned ahead of time: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.
- You tell us where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
- We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from the ground.
- We check hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
- The roof space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
- You receive a report with photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand

Honest limits
This is not a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:
- What’s behind fascias and inside walls
- Whether a material contains asbestos (a specialist asbestos surveyor’s job)
- Hidden sections we can’t view safely
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you before you book. What our survey covers.

Tips from our surveys
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- Note any damp stains below the gutters
- Get the gutters cleaned out every year
- Ask for valleys and parapet gutters to be cleared too
- Check the loft with care after heavy rain
After any work is done, watch the gutters in the next heavy rain. Rain should flow to the outlets and down the downpipes. If it doesn’t, tell whoever did the work.
Look at the gutters from indoors or the ground when it pours. Water spilling over the edge or out of a joint is a sign that something needs attention before damage builds up.
Gutter surveys in Chaddleworth: local notes
Older houses in the South East frequently have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters. Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. Your council and Historic England’s list will tell you where you stand, before anyone quotes for re-roofing.
Take a building like Chaddleworth St Andrew's C.E. Primary School: a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time. The streets around a church like Church of St Andrew are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.
