Gutter survey in Crampmoor
We check the rainwater system above ground level: gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows. It is not a CCTV drain survey and we can’t see inside buried drains. Where water seems to be backing up from below ground, the report will say so, so you can get the drains checked separately. Anything we find above ground, like a split hopper or a leaking downpipe, is photographed and recorded. If you’ve noticed leaking or loose downpipes and hoppers and outlets full of debris, we can find out what’s behind it, on valley gutters, downpipes and outlets and hoppers alike.
In a village or hamlet like Crampmoor, older cottages and farmhouses often sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. We report on what can be seen safely, and thatch is a specialist material. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs frequently need the most attention.
The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent.

Crampmoor questions
Is my home in Crampmoor listed or in a conservation area?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.
Do you cover smaller places like Crampmoor?
Yes, Crampmoor is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
How do I book a survey in Crampmoor?
Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day.
Do you survey at weekends?
Yes, we carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays as well as weekdays. Just ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email to arrange it.
Could my damp wall be caused by the gutters?
We check whether rainwater from the gutters is reaching the wall, through overflows, drips or damaged downpipes. We can’t see inside walls, so the report covers what can be seen.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We look at the parts we are given access to.
Tips that help
Nothing here needs a ladder. A few suggestions:
- Get trees that overhang the gutters trimmed
- Do not leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out
- Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
- Note any damp stains below the gutters
Where the evidence points to drains below ground, the report says so, so you can arrange a drain survey. We also note anything else we spot on the roof while we’re there.
Look at the gutters from indoors or the ground when it pours. Overflows and dripping joints are a sign to act before the walls suffer.
How the survey changes by roof type
Box and secret gutters
Box and secret gutters frequently cause leaks indoors. We look at the outlets, linings and overflows where safe.
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Older plastic gutters can turn brittle and crack. We check joints, brackets and the line of each run.

What affects the cost of gutter surveys
The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. The main factors are:
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
- The size of the roof
We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, all including VAT. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget, with the most urgent items set out first.
What happens on the day
We look at the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the loft space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey usually takes between one and two hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Rural addresses near Crampmoor can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- First, we agree the areas to focus on.
- Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
- Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
- We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
- Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.
Getting ready for the survey
- Leave side gates unlocked
- Let us know about parking near the property
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared

Checking the roof from the ground
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey.
Crampmoor homes and their roofs
Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Whatever the covering, it is often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first. Historic houses such as Mottisfont Abbey, about 4.4 miles north-west, show how far back building in the area around Crampmoor goes. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead.
The streets around a church such as St Swithun's Church are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look. Take a building like Cupernham Infant School: large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other. Landlords with a home close to Romsey station may find that the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.
