FAQs for Egypt
Is my home in Egypt listed or in a conservation area?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
Will you come out to Egypt?
Yes, Egypt is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Are you structural engineers?
No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but we don’t provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. The report will say if you need an engineer.
Do you survey at weekends?
Yes. Surveys are carried out on any day of the week. Just call 07833 053749 or send us an email to arrange a day.
When does the report arrive?
It depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. The report is emailed to you.
How do I book a survey in Egypt?
It is easiest to phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email. Let us know the address and a little about the roof. We survey on any day of the week.
What does a gutter survey cost?
Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. The price depends on the size of the building and how easy the gutters are to see. For a price, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
About our gutter survey in Egypt
People book a gutter survey when gutters overflow, when damp appears or before the wetter months. Landlords and managing agents use it to plan maintenance, and some buyers want the rainwater system checked before exchange. Whoever books, we inspect and report in the same way, with photos and written recommendations. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. We survey parapet and box gutters, outlets and hoppers and eaves gutters, and common reasons people get in touch are brackets that have dropped or snapped and rotten fascias or stained soffits.
Somewhere as small as Egypt, homes are frequently older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs frequently need the most attention.
Report times depend on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Egypt homes and their roofs
Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area.
If you own a rental within reach of Micheldever station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints.

What we’re asked to look at in Egypt
Gutter brackets work loose or corrode with age. Wet leaves and silt add a lot of weight and the extra load drags the gutter down. Lose the fall and water gathers in the dip, then overflows.
A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:
- Rotten fascias or stained soffits
- Gutters full of debris and silt
- Cracked or loose downpipes
- Brackets that have dropped or snapped
Take an older house close to Ebenezer Methodist Chapel: the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.

What we can’t see
In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:
- What’s hidden inside a downpipe
- Rot or damp concealed behind fascias or inside walls
- The inside of buried drains
If you’re not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.
Roof types and parts we check
- Eaves gutters
- Fascias and soffits
- Valley gutters
- Parapet and box gutters
- Downpipes
- Outlets and hoppers
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Tips from our surveys
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:
- Have overhanging branches cut back
- Ask for valleys and parapet gutters to be cleared too
- Look for downpipes coming loose
- Watch ceilings under valley gutters for fresh marks
For let and shared buildings, the report can go on file to help plan maintenance. The photographs help when you explain the work to others.
Look at the gutters from indoors or the ground when it pours. Water spilling over the edge or out of a joint is a sign that something needs attention before damage builds up.
What happens on the day
On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. After that, we check everything we can see safely. Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. Around Egypt, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- First, we agree the areas to focus on.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
- You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.
Getting ready for the survey
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent
- If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
