Gutter survey in Hempstead
People book a gutter survey when gutters overflow, when damp appears or before the wetter months. Landlords and managing agents use the report to plan upkeep and buyers sometimes want the gutters looked at before they exchange. The survey and report follow the same steps whatever the reason with photos and clear recommendations. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. We survey outlets and hoppers, eaves gutters and valley gutters, and the problems we are asked to look at most are gutters overflowing in heavy rain and cracked or loose downpipes.
Around Hempstead, gardens, hedges and nearby trees can mean leaves and moss end up on roofs and in gutters. Blocked gutters overflow and soak the walls below. It is the kind of slow problem a roof report picks up early. Moss on the roof and weeds in the gutter are both easy to spot from ground level.
It isn’t only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

What we do, step by step
There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we’ll take it from there. The survey itself takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Parking around Hempstead is normally easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from ground level, with the loft showing the underside, while taller roofs may need other vantage points or the drone where applicable.
- We start with what you’ve noticed, such as damp or overflowing gutters.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are looked at from ground level and windows.
- We check hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
- Where it’s safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
- A report with photographs and recommendations follows.
How to prepare
- Let us know about parking before the day
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Jot down any questions you want answered

When to book a survey in Hempstead
Falling leaves are the most common cause of blocked gutters. Nearby trees drop leaves, twigs and seeds into gutters every autumn, and they collect at the outlets. Once an outlet is choked, the gutter fills and overflows.
Signs worth acting on include:
- Dripping or leaking gutter joints
- Valley or box gutters that overflow inside
- Gutters overflowing in heavy rain
- Gutters that have fallen out of line
Trees in and around South Wood shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching.
Before you book any roof surveyor
- How long they’ve been surveying roofs
- Whether you get a written report with photos
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?

Hempstead: your questions answered
How do I find out if my home in Hempstead is listed?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Do you cover smaller places like Hempstead?
Yes, Hempstead is covered. Our area covers London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
How experienced are you?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys, across London and South East England.
Do you look in the roof space?
If the survey needs it and the roof space can be reached safely, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. We look at the roof, not the whole building, and it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
What does a gutter survey cost?
Our price is from £150, including VAT. The price depends on the size of the building and how easy the gutters are to see. For a price, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
Is a Saturday or Sunday visit possible?
Yes, we carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays as well as weekdays. Just call 07833 053749 or email us to arrange it.
What you can safely check yourself
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Gutter surveys around Hempstead
Hempstead lies within about 3 miles of the sea, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. Older houses across Kent often have handmade clay or peg tiles, and many have tile-hung walls. Kent’s older buildings take in oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses as well. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.
If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near All Saints Church, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first. For landlords with property near Rainham (Kent) station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.
Hempstead is about 2 miles south of Gillingham, in Medway. We cover Hempstead and the rest of Medway. Our area takes in places right across Medway. Maidstone is in our area too.
We cover every part of ME7 and ME8 for gutter surveys and the streets around it. If you need a gutter survey at a property on Harrow Road, Spekes Road and Capstone Road or a nearby road, we can help. Hempstead is on the A278, which makes it straightforward to reach. If you’re just outside Hempstead, we cover Capstone (1 mile north-west), Darland (1 mile north-west), Wigmore (1 mile east), Hale (1 mile north-west) and Park Wood (1 mile east). Within a short drive, we also cover Rochester (4 miles north-west), Strood (5 miles north-west), Hoo St Werburgh (5 miles north), Chatham Waterfront (3 miles north-west), Rochester Riverside (4 miles north-west) and Peters Village (5 miles west).

Prices for gutter surveys in Hempstead
The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. The main factors are:
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
- The shape of the roof and its details
- How many separate roofs there are, like extensions, dormers and garages
Every price we give includes VAT. Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. We confirm the price for the job before booking.
What to tell us when you get in touch
We will typically ask about:
- Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window
- What kind of property and roof it is
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
A quick phone call is typically the easiest start: phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll ask a few questions about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.
How the survey changes by roof type
Aluminium and other metal gutters
Joints and fixings are the weak points on metal gutters. Any leaks or corrosion we spot go in the report.
Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters
Lead linings are common in valleys and parapet gutters on older houses. Splits and failed joints in the lead can let water straight in.
Why it is worth a survey now in Hempstead
A dripping joint or sagging bracket will not get better on its own. Every downpour adds to the damage, on walls, timber and sometimes inside. Getting it surveyed now shows what needs attention first. In an older home around Hempstead, water from a roof defect can get into timber and plaster, which is far harder to put right than the roof fault itself.
Prices start from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on how big and how high the roof is, access and the package you choose.
