Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Martyr's Green
Damp on walls, water marks under a valley or streaks down the brickwork can often be traced to the gutters. Our gutter survey helps show whether the rainwater system is the cause, from whatever is safely visible. Where the cause looks more like the roof covering or a flashing, the report says so. The next step is suggested too. If you’ve noticed hoppers and outlets full of debris and water backing up from a hidden gutter, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A roof report shows what needs attention first. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.
The written findings come by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

Different roofs, different checks
Cast iron gutters
Cast iron tends to fail at the joints and fixings. Cracks, rust and leaks are recorded as far as we can see them.
Aluminium and other metal gutters
Metal gutters are common on commercial buildings and some homes. Their joints and outlets still need checking.

What else we do in Martyr's Green
Do you need a gutter survey in Martyr's Green?
Most gutter joints rely on seals or sealant that wear out. Plastic gutters move with heat and cold, and in time their joints can drip. Cast iron joints can corrode and part once the paint has worn away.
Typical things we’re asked to look at include:
- Water backing up from a hidden gutter
- Soffits marked by water
- Choked outlets or hopper heads
- Downpipes that are split or coming away
If you live near a park like The Forest and the Highlands, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Are they insured for the work?
- Is VAT included in the price?
- Whether the loft is part of the inspection
- Which limits apply to the survey
Surveys for landlords and agents in Martyr's Green
Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work.
Letting agents often book on a landlord’s behalf. Access is agreed with the tenant beforehand.
How it works
The visit has one job: to see as much of the gutter as can be seen safely and record it clearly. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit usually takes an hour or two on an ordinary house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Somewhere as small as Martyr's Green, access is frequently the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- We start with what you’ve noticed, such as damp or overflowing gutters.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and windows.
- Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can be seen safely.
- Where it is safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
- You receive a report with photos and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Keep pets in another room
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch

Martyr's Green questions
Can a landlord with a rental near Effingham Junction station book a roof survey?
Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. You can call 07833 053749 or email us with the address and what you need.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Martyr's Green?
We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Do you work in Martyr's Green?
Yes. Our area covers London and South East England, Martyr's Green included.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Yes, where it’s applicable. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first. Tell us about it as you book and we will plan the survey around it.
How much is a gutter survey?
Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. The price depends on the size of the building and how easy the gutters are to see. To get a price, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs such as sagging are noted, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. If one is needed, the report says so.
Can I check my roof myself?
You can learn a lot from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
How we price gutter surveys
To price your survey, we check:
- Building height and the viewpoints available
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
A Basic Survey starts from £150, with VAT included. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, both inc. VAT. You’ll know the price for the job before booking.
Booking your survey
When you call or email, these details help:
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- What’s prompted the survey
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
Not sure which survey you need? It is easiest to ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and describe the roof and why you want it surveyed. We’ll talk you through the options and what they cost.
Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Martyr's Green
Older houses across Surrey often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging. A few of Surrey’s oldest buildings have heavy Horsham stone slab roofs. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first. The wider area around Martyr's Green has a long history of building, with Byfleet Manor about 2.2 miles north-west. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
If you own a rental within reach of Effingham Junction station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let.
