Gutter survey in Wisley: what you get

Some gutters are easy to see from the street, but many are not. Valley gutters between slopes, gutters behind parapet walls and box or secret gutters can overflow inside the building when they block. We look at them as far as they can safely be seen, from ground level, from windows, from the loft space and from the roof where it is safe. Many leaks indoors start at a hidden gutter. If you’re worried about leaks at the gutter joints and leaves and moss blocking gutters, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

Older buildings in small places like Wisley may be listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are often matched when work is done.

Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters, each with a short note and a photograph. It records what’s sound as well as what is not.

What a gutter survey looks like in Wisley

Historic houses such as Byfleet Manor, about 0.8 miles north-east, show how far back building in the area around Wisley goes. If yours is one of the older homes, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. Older houses across Surrey often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging. A few of Surrey’s oldest buildings have heavy Horsham stone slab roofs. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.

For businesses in and around places such as The Peacocks, a written record of the roof’s condition helps you plan maintenance rather than react to leaks. If you look after a building such as St Mary's CofE Controlled Primary School, a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time. If you let a flat or house near West Byfleet station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant.

How the survey changes by roof type

Aluminium and other metal gutters

On big buildings, one blocked outlet can affect a long run, so we check the outlets carefully.

Plastic (uPVC) gutters

On plastic systems, slipped joints are one of the most common faults. We record each one we can see.

How the survey works

We work from the outside in: outside views come first, then the roof space if there’s safe access. All told, expect an hour or two at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Older rural homes like those around Wisley can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. First, you tell us what you’ve seen, like overflows or damp.
  2. We look along the gutters, downpipes and fascias from ground level and from windows.
  3. Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can be seen safely.
  4. We look in the loft space, where there is safe access, for signs of water getting in.
  5. The findings are written up with photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Make sure we can get to the back of the property
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch

Your questions about gutter surveys in Wisley

Will you come out to Wisley?

Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Is my home in Wisley listed or in a conservation area?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

What happens after the survey?

We email you the written report with photos and recommendations. You can use it to talk to a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent, whichever applies.

How long will you be on site?

Most visits to a house take about 1–2 hours, and longer for larger or complex roofs.

Do you survey underground drains?

No, CCTV drain work isn’t part of this survey. We check gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows and flags signs of a drain problem.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning. Let us know about it when you book and we’ll explain what’s needed.

What will the report tell me?

Written findings with photos, explaining the condition of the gutter, any defects and our recommendations. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.

Honest limits

Some things can’t be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:

  • Pipes below ground level
  • Whether a material contains asbestos (a specialist asbestos surveyor’s job)
  • Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards

If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. The full list of what we check.

What this survey covers

DIY checks: what’s safe

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

It helps to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.

For landlords and managing agents

We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords, from shops and offices to industrial units. Larger roofs take longer, and they’re priced for the size.

We survey roofs for landlords and agents as well as householders. A photo-illustrated written report gives you a clear record of the gutter.

Useful tips for Wisley property owners

Getting the most from a gutter survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:

  • Note any damp stains below the gutters
  • Book gutter clearing once a year, more frequently near trees
  • Ask for valleys and parapet gutters to be cleared too
  • Have overhanging branches cut back

For let and shared buildings, the report can go on file and use it to plan upkeep. The photographs help when you explain the work to others.

Look at the gutters from indoors or the ground when it pours. Overflows and dripping joints are a sign to act before the walls suffer.
