Gutter Survey in Steward's Green
Not sure what state the gutter is in? You can book a gutter survey in Steward's Green and across Essex, with plain-English findings.
- Leaves and moss blocking gutters
- Gutters that have fallen out of line
- Soffits marked by water
Can I check my roof myself?
A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.
Gutter survey in Steward's Green: what you get
We look at the rainwater system above ground level, from the gutters down to where the downpipes meet the ground. It is not a CCTV drain survey and we can’t see inside buried drains. Where water seems to be backing up from below ground, we will say so in the report, so you can get the drains checked separately. Problems above ground, from split hoppers to leaking downpipes, are photographed and noted. If you are worried about leaks at the gutter joints and downpipes that are split or coming away, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Some older homes in villages like Steward's Green are listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Older materials like clay tiles, slate and stone are often matched when work is done.
Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, sent by email. It sets out the condition of the gutter, any defects and our written recommendations.

Tips from our surveys
From years of surveys, a few habits stand out:
- Check from ground level or a window, not a ladder
- Don’t leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out
- Check the loft with care after heavy rain
- Note any damp stains below the gutters
How quickly the report arrives depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. It’s sent to you by email once it is done.
Get the gutters cleared every year, and more often if trees overhang the roof. Late autumn, after the leaves have fallen, is a sensible time. Clean gutters can do their job.
Steward's Green homes and their roofs
Weatherboarded walls and clay tile roofs are typical of older Essex buildings, with post-war and more recent estates making up much of the newer housing. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. The wider area around Steward's Green has a long history of building, with Hill Hall about 1.6 miles south-east. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters.
Take a building like Ivy Chimneys Primary School: large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.

Do you need a gutter survey in Steward's Green?
Moss grows on many tiled and slate roofs, and heavy rain washes clumps of it into the gutters. With grit from the coverings, it forms a thick sludge that holds water in the gutter and lets weeds take root.
These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:
- Valley or box gutters that overflow inside
- Leaves and moss blocking gutters
- Sagging gutters and loose brackets
- Joints that drip after rain
Take an older house close to Church of St John the Baptist: its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.
What to check before booking
- What insurance they carry
- What’s outside the scope of the survey
- What the report includes, and whether it has photos
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
When you need someone else
Some things can’t be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:
- Blockages deep inside downpipes
- Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards
- Pipes below ground level

What we do, step by step
Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available. A typical visit takes about one to two hours at most homes, and longer for a large or complex roof. Rural addresses near Steward's Green can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.
- We start with what you’ve noticed, such as damp or overflowing gutters.
- We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from ground level.
- Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can safely be seen.
- The loft space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
- You receive a report with photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
- Leave side gates unlocked
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

Advice
Steward's Green questions
How do I find out if my home in Steward's Green is listed?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Is Steward's Green in the area you cover?
We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
Is there a good time of year to book a gutter survey?
There is no wrong time. If water is already spilling over, book sooner rather than later as overflowing water can damage walls.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only when it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where it applies cover most of what’s needed, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.
How experienced are you?
We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.
What do I do with the report?
You will receive the report by email, and what you do next is up to you: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Where it’s applicable and safe, yes. We are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where applicable.
