Gutter surveys in Loughton: local notes
The wider area around Loughton has a long history of building, with Hill Hall about 4.1 miles north-east. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters. In Essex, older buildings are often clay-tiled, many with weatherboarding, and lots of post-war and modern estates besides. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as The Alderton Infant School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. Trees in and around Roding Valley recreation ground shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters.

Gutter survey in Loughton
We look at the rainwater system above ground level, from the gutters down to where the downpipes meet the ground. It is not a CCTV drain survey and we can’t see inside buried drains. If the problem looks like a blocked or broken drain below ground, we will say so in the report, so you can get the drains checked separately. Problems above ground, from split hoppers to leaking downpipes, are photographed and noted. We survey parapet and box gutters, fascias and soffits and eaves gutters, and people most often book us about gutters full of debris and silt and valley or box gutters that overflow inside.
Semis and terraces in a town like Loughton share roof details with the neighbours. When a stack or gutter is shared, the problem may not be on your side alone. Shared parts are looked at as far as they can be seen safely from the property we are surveying. It’s useful to mention any shared stacks or gutters when booking.
The report does not just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend.

Common roof problems in Loughton
Brackets can loosen, corrode or snap over the years. Wet leaves and silt add a lot of weight and the extra load drags the gutter down. Once the fall is lost, water sits at the low point and spills over.
Typical things we are asked to look at include:
- Rotten fascias or stained soffits
- Overflowing valley or parapet gutters
- Leaks at the gutter joints
- Sagging gutters and loose brackets
If you let a flat or house near Chingford station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.

DIY checks: what’s safe
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
What a gutter survey doesn’t cover
Before you book, it is worth knowing what a survey won’t do:
- What’s hidden inside a downpipe
- Rot or damp concealed behind fascias or inside walls
- Hidden sections we can’t view safely
If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

How it works
Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from each safe vantage point, take photos as we go and make notes for the report. Most visits take an hour or two at a typical home, and more on a big or complicated roof. In Loughton, parking is rarely complicated, though it helps to know about driveways or restrictions. We look at the roof from ground level and from windows, then from the loft where there is safe access, and from the roof itself where it’s safe.
- We start with what you’ve noticed, like damp or overflowing gutters.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are looked at from ground level and windows.
- We check hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
- The roof space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
- You receive a report with photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

Box and secret gutters
