Gutter survey in Stocker's Head: what you get

We carry out gutter surveys in Stocker's Head as part of our cover across London and South East England. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, from ground level, from windows and from the loft space. Time on site normally takes about one to two hours at most homes, and longer for a large or complex roof. Afterwards, you get a written report with photos and recommendations. If you’re worried about water backing up from a hidden gutter and gutters overflowing in heavy rain, we can find out what’s behind it, on outlets and hoppers, valley gutters and downpipes alike.

In a village or hamlet like Stocker's Head, older cottages and farmhouses frequently sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. We report on whatever is safely visible, and thatch is a specialist material. On older roofs, it’s usually the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.

Nothing in the report is left vague: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, along with how urgent it is.

Fascias and soffits

Overflowing water stains soffits and rots timber. They’re looked at as part of the survey.

Plastic (uPVC) gutters

Plastic can become brittle with age and crack. We look at the joints, brackets and falls.

What this survey cannot tell you

No survey can tell you everything, and we’d rather be clear about that before booking. Bear these in mind:

  • What’s behind fascias and inside walls
  • Whether a material contains asbestos (a specialist asbestos surveyor’s job)
  • What’s hidden inside a downpipe

If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and does not.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Outlets and hoppers
  • Downpipes
  • Fascias and soffits
  • Parapet and box gutters
  • Eaves gutters
  • Valley gutters

What we are asked to look at in Stocker's Head

Many gutter joints depend on rubber seals or sealant that age. Plastic gutters move with heat and cold, and in time their joints can drip. Cast iron joints can corrode and part once the paint has worn away.

Most people get in touch when they’ve noticed something like this:

  • Sagging gutters and loose brackets
  • Water spilling over the gutter edge
  • Choked outlets or hopper heads
  • Rotten fascias or stained soffits

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Charing Church of England Primary School, a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time.

Stocker's Head: your questions answered

Will you come out to Stocker's Head?

Yes, we do. Our area covers London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.

Is my home in Stocker's Head listed or in a conservation area?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Will the survey check for asbestos?

No. We do not carry out asbestos testing. Where gutters, downpipes or soffits could be asbestos cement, we flag them and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

Will I get photos?

Yes. Photographs are taken throughout the survey, and the report uses them to show each finding.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach.

Could my damp wall be caused by the gutters?

We check whether rainwater from the gutters is reaching the wall from overflows, leaking joints or loose downpipes. We can’t see inside walls, so the report covers what can be seen.

How quickly is the report sent?

Each package has its own report time. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. Mention any deadline as you book.

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Stocker's Head

Across Kent, older roofs are often handmade clay or peg tiles, and tile-hanging on upper walls is a familiar sight. You’ll also find oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses among the county’s older buildings. Whatever the covering, it’s often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first. The wider area around Stocker's Head has a long history of building, with Belmont House and Gardens about 3.9 miles north. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters.

What happens on the day

Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. The whole visit typically takes an hour or two for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Older rural homes like those around Stocker's Head can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely.

  1. We start with what you’ve noticed, such as damp or overflowing gutters.

Advice

Before and after the survey

Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:

  • Look out for overflows when it pours
  • Check from ground level or a window, not a ladder
  • Get the gutters cleaned out every year
  • Look for downpipes coming loose

You receive a written report with photos and clear written recommendations. You can pass it to whoever you choose to do the work so they know what needs doing.

Deal with drips, sags and loose downpipes early. Left alone, they usually grow and spilled water harms brickwork and woodwork.
