Tips that help

Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. Our suggestions:

  • Get trees that overhang the gutters trimmed
  • Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain
  • Check for spilling water in a downpour
  • Watch for green marks down the brickwork

Where the evidence points to drains below ground, the report says so, so you can arrange a drain survey. We also note anything else we spot on the roof while we’re there.

Have your gutters cleared at least once a year or more frequently near trees. Late autumn, after the leaves have fallen, is a sensible time. Clean gutters can do their job.

Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Stonecrouch

Some gutters are easy to see from the street but lots of gutters are tucked away. Valley gutters between slopes, gutters behind parapet walls and box or secret gutters can send water indoors when they overflow. We check them as far as they can be seen safely using vantage points, the roof space and the roof itself where safe. Many leaks indoors start at a hidden gutter. We are frequently asked to look into water backing up from a hidden gutter and joints that drip after rain, on outlets and hoppers, eaves gutters and parapet and box gutters.

In a small place like Stonecrouch, many roofs stand in the open, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A roof report shows what needs attention first. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.

The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent.

Common questions in Stonecrouch

Will you come out to Stonecrouch?

Yes, Stonecrouch is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Stonecrouch?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Will you check if gutters are causing damp inside?

Overflowing gutters often lead to damp walls, and the survey looks for that. If the evidence points elsewhere, we’ll say so, based on what we can see.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.

Is a Saturday or Sunday visit possible?

Yes, we carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays as well as weekdays. Just call 07833 053749 or use the contact form to arrange it.

Is a CCTV drain survey included?

No, CCTV drain work isn’t part of this survey. The survey covers gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows and flags signs of a drain problem.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.

What affects the cost of gutter surveys

All our prices include VAT. The things that change the price are:

  • House, block, shop or office
  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
  • How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
  • How big the roof is

Prices start from £150, including VAT, for a Basic Survey. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400. You will know the price for your survey before booking.

What to tell us when you contact us

You don’t need to know any roofing terms. Just let us know:

  • What made you get in touch
  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • The address and postcode of the property

Our price is from £150, including VAT. The exact figure depends on the roof and the package, so ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the details.

What you can safely check yourself

It is useful to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry, as it helps us focus the survey.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.

Local roofs in Stonecrouch

Older houses across Sussex frequently have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings, alongside oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. With Scotney Castle about 1.6 miles north-west, Stonecrouch sits in an area with a long building history. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead.

If you own a rental within reach of Etchingham station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak.

How it works

It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. The visit typically takes between one and two hours for most houses, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Cottages and farmhouses around Stonecrouch often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.

  1. We agree which parts of the building you are most worried about.
  2. Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
  3. We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
  4. We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
  5. Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets in another room

Advice

What happens if roof problems are left?

Small gutter faults rarely fix themselves. Each heavy rain puts more water where it shouldn’t be on the walls, the fascias and sometimes the rooms inside. Getting it surveyed now shows what needs attention first. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Stonecrouch, driving rain gets into any weakness, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, with VAT included. Size, height and access can affect the price too.
