Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Stonymarsh
Most blocked gutters are full of leaves, moss or silt. Buildings near trees collect more and moss from the roof slopes makes it worse. Our survey shows which gutters are blocked or standing full, which outlets and hoppers are choked and whether any overflows are doing their job. The photos show you exactly what we found. Blocked gutters are easy to put off but it rarely improves. Typical surveys look at brackets that have dropped or snapped and overflowing valley or parapet gutters, on outlets and hoppers, parapet and box gutters and fascias and soffits.
Somewhere as small as Stonymarsh, homes are frequently older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, frequently with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.
The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photographs show what each point refers to, and recommendations are put with the most urgent first where relevant.

Gutter surveys in Stonymarsh: local notes
Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters. The wider area around Stonymarsh has a long history of building, with Mottisfont Abbey about 0.5 miles west. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
The streets around a church like Church of St Andrew are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look. If you let a flat or house near Mottisfont & Dunbridge station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints.

What happens if roof problems are left?
Going up a ladder to check your own gutters carries real risk. From the ground you can spot drips and overflows but hidden gutters are another matter. We inspect as far as it’s safe to see and put it in writing. In a place like Stonymarsh, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

Stonymarsh: your questions answered
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Stonymarsh?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
I let a flat near Mottisfont & Dunbridge station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. Just phone 07833 053749 or email us with the details.
Will you check the loft?
Usually, if there’s one and it can be reached safely. The loft space can show things the outside cannot, like damp timbers, staining or daylight.
Do you cover Stonymarsh for gutter surveys?
Yes, we do. Stonymarsh is part of the area we cover.
Can a gutter survey explain damp on my walls?
We check whether rainwater from the gutters is reaching the wall from overflows, leaking joints or loose downpipes. We cannot see inside the wall itself, so the report covers what can be seen.
Do you check valley and parapet gutters?
Yes. These gutters often cause leaks indoors when they block so we pay close attention to them. Parts of them may not be visible, and the report says so.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. It’s a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.
Honest limits
Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- Whether a material contains asbestos (a specialist asbestos surveyor’s job)
- Underground drains, which need a CCTV drain survey
- The inside of a downpipe along its whole length
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will recommend the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.

How the survey works
We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. A typical visit takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Around Stonymarsh, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it is safe.

Advice
Should I look at the roof myself first?
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
