Gutter survey in Test Valley, Hampshire
Gutter surveys in Test Valley and the rest of Hampshire. Surveys run on any day of the week.
- Dripping or leaking gutter joints
- Gutters overflowing in heavy rain
- Blocked outlets and hoppers
Before and after the survey
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:
- Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
- Keep climbers away from the eaves
- Watch the gutters during heavy rain
- Look for green streaks or damp patches on walls
You receive a written report with photographs and clear written recommendations. You can pass it to whoever you choose to do the work so they know what needs doing.
Have your gutters cleared at least once a year, and more frequently if trees overhang the roof. Late autumn, after the leaves have fallen, is a sensible time. Clear gutters can carry water away as they should.
How a gutter survey works in Test Valley
We survey gutters and rainwater systems in Test Valley and right across London and South East England. We inspect everything we can see safely, from ground level, from windows and from the roof space. Time on site typically takes about one to two hours for a house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. The written report follows, with photos and recommendations. Common reasons to book are valley or box gutters that overflow inside and leaves and moss blocking gutters, across valley gutters, outlets and hoppers and eaves gutters.
In a village or hamlet like Test Valley, older cottages and farmhouses often sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. On older roofs, it is normally the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Different roofs, different checks
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Many homes have plastic gutters and downpipes. As the seals age, joints can start to drip and brackets may drop under the weight of debris.
Aluminium and other metal gutters
Aluminium and other metal gutters are used on many newer and commercial buildings. Joints, outlets and fixings are the parts we focus on.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Where a roof is shared: we need access agreed with the building owner or managing agent. Mention it when you get in touch and we will plan the survey around it.
If you own several properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To discuss a number of properties, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the addresses.

Local roofs in Test Valley
Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters. Historic houses such as Stargroves, about 2.7 miles north, show how far back building in the area around Test Valley goes. If yours is one of the older homes, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof.
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St James, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.

How the survey works
The visit has one job: to look at the gutter as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photographs go into the written report. It normally takes about one to two hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. In a hamlet or village like Test Valley, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- We agree which parts of the building you’re most worried about.
- Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
- You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.
Before the survey
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
- Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors

Related advice
Should I look at the roof myself first?
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Common questions in Test Valley
Is Test Valley within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
How do I find out if my home in Test Valley is listed?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. Visible signs like deflection or sagging are recorded, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. If one is needed, the report says so.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only where it is safe to do so. We inspect whatever is safely visible: from the ground, from windows, from inside the loft space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we can’t see is noted in the report.
How fast do I get the report?
Each package has its own report time. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. Mention any deadline when you book.
When is the best time for a gutter survey?
You can book at any time of year. Booking before autumn and winter gives you time to plan though problems often show up after heavy rain.
What will the report tell me?
You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos. Points are put in order of urgency where relevant.
