Gutter Survey in Watermill
A survey of gutters, valleys, outlets and downpipes across Watermill, with drones and thermal imaging where they help. Get in touch for a price.
- Leaking or loose downpipes
- Sagging gutters and loose brackets
- Leaves and moss blocking gutters
What happens on the day
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes between one and two hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Rural addresses near Watermill can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- We start by hearing about any drips, overflows or damp patches.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and vantage points.
- Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can be seen safely.
- Where the loft can be reached safely, we check it for staining or damp.
- The findings are written up with photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
- If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices

About our gutter survey in Watermill
A gutter needs a steady fall towards its outlet or water sits in them. When brackets sag or joints part, water pools, drips and spills over at the low points. We look along each run for sags, gaps and leaking joints, along with the brackets and downpipe fixings. You get written recommendations, prioritised by urgency where relevant. If you’ve noticed water spilling over the gutter edge and overflowing valley or parapet gutters, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Some older homes in villages like Watermill are listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Older materials like clay tiles, slate and stone are often matched when work is done.
The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
Questions from Watermill
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Watermill?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
Is the coastal weather around Watermill hard on roofs?
Places near the sea get more wind and more salt in the air than inland, and both are hard on roofs. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that ahead of time, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
Can a gutter survey explain damp on my walls?
Leaking gutters and downpipes are a common cause of damp walls, and we check for exactly that. If the cause looks like something else, the report says so as far as we can tell from what’s visible.
Do you need to get into the loft?
If there is a loft and safe access to it, yes. The loft space can show things the outside can’t, such as damp timbers, staining or daylight.
Will you fly a drone over my roof?
Yes, where it is applicable. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.
What’s in the report?
Written findings with photos, explaining the condition of the gutter, any defects and our recommendations, by urgency where it matters. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.

What we look for on each type of roof
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Older plastic gutters can turn brittle and crack. We check joints, brackets and the line of each run.
Box and secret gutters
Secret gutters are hidden under the edge of the roof covering, so they’re easy to forget. We look at what’s visible and note what isn’t.
Honest limits
Some things can’t be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:
- Whether a material contains asbestos (a specialist asbestos surveyor’s job)
- Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards
- Blockages deep inside downpipes

How we price gutter surveys
We confirm the exact price before booking. This is what makes a difference:
- Height and safe access
- Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
- House, block, shop or office
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before booking.
Booking your survey
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
- What kind of property and roof it is
Not sure which survey you need? It is easiest to phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and describe the roof and why you want it surveyed. We’ll explain the options and the price.
Signs you need a gutter survey in Watermill
Some gutters may be too small, or have too few downpipes, for the roof they serve. An extension or extra roof slope can add water to an existing gutter, and a heavy downpour shows up the problem.
Signs worth acting on include:
- Overflowing eaves gutters
- Gutters packed with leaves or moss
- Blocked outlets and hoppers
- Gutters that have fallen out of line
If you look after a building such as Bexhill High Academy, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Watermill
Watermill lies within about 3 miles of the sea, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces. Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. Your council and Historic England’s list will tell you where you stand, ideally before any re-roofing is planned.
If you let a flat or house near Crowhurst station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let. Homes near green spaces such as Highwoods can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching.
