Local roofs in West Tisted
Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters. With Hinton Ampner House about 3.6 miles west, West Tisted sits in an area with a long building history. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.
If you live in an older home near Church of St Mary Magdalene, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.
West Tisted is about 7 miles north-west of Petersfield, in Hampshire. In West Tisted, as across Hampshire, every roof gets the same careful survey. West Tisted is one of the places in Hampshire where we work. We also survey roofs in Southampton.

Gutter survey in West Tisted: what you get
Owners get in touch after seeing an overflow, finding damp or planning ahead for winter. Landlords and managing agents use it to plan maintenance, and some buyers want the rainwater system checked before exchange. The survey and report follow the same steps whatever the reason, with photographs and written recommendations. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. We survey fascias and soffits, outlets and hoppers and eaves gutters, and the problems we are asked to look at most are soffits marked by water and dripping or leaking gutter joints.
Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A roof report shows what needs attention first. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are often where weather gets in first.
The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photos show what each point refers to.

Leave it or get it looked at?
Going up a ladder to check your own gutters carries real risk. From the ground you can spot drips and overflows, but valleys, parapets and box gutters are hard to see. Our survey covers whatever is safely visible and records it with photos. Around West Tisted, older homes often have old roof timbers, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.
Prices start from £150, including VAT, for a Basic Survey. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400. You’ll know the price for your survey before booking.

What happens on the day
The visit typically starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. In total, it takes about one to two hours for most houses, and more on a big or complicated roof. Rural addresses near West Tisted can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- You tell us where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and windows.
- Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can safely be seen.
- Where it’s safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
- You receive a report with photos and recommendations.
Getting ready for the survey
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Leave a clear route to the loft
Booking a survey
Our price is from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, so call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the details.

Tips from our surveys
Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:
- Make sure downpipe clips are holding
- Note any damp stains below the gutters
- Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain
- Get the gutters cleaned out every year
Where the evidence points to drains below ground, the report says so, so a drain survey can be arranged. Anything else we notice on the roof, as far as we can see it, is noted too.
Get the gutters cleared every year or more often near trees. Late autumn, after the leaves have fallen, is a sensible time. Clear gutters can carry water away as they should.
What we look for on each type of roof
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
On plastic systems, slipped joints are one of the most common faults. The report notes every one we spot.
Fascias and soffits
Some older soffits may contain asbestos. Any we think could be are flagged for a specialist asbestos surveyor to check.

The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed.

Do you test soffits or gutters for asbestos?
No, that’s a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. We point out materials on older buildings that could contain asbestos so you can arrange that check.

What a survey costs
To price your survey, we check:
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
- Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
- How big the roof is
Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package you pick makes a difference too. The price is always agreed first.
Helping us price your survey
A few details help us recommend the right survey and price. When you contact us, let us know:
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- Anything about access we should know
- The property’s address and postcode
Most bookings start with a short call: ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll ask a few questions about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too. Larger roofs take longer, and they’re priced for the size.
Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client.
