Gutter survey in Whitesmith: what you get
Most blocked gutters are full of leaves, moss or silt. Homes close to trees fill their gutters faster and moss from the roof slopes makes it worse. We note where gutters are clogged or holding water and where outlets or hoppers are choked and whether any overflows are doing their job. The photographs show you exactly what we found. It is an easy job to put off, but they rarely get better. We survey outlets and hoppers, parapet and box gutters and eaves gutters, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are overflowing valley or parapet gutters and water spilling over the gutter edge.
Somewhere as small as Whitesmith, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are often old. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.
What you get is a clear record of the gutter on the day we saw it. It’s useful right away, and a good reference for later, such as when you want to compare after future work.

Why act early in Whitesmith
A written report gives you a dated record of the gutters’ condition, useful when you are planning maintenance or getting work priced. Without it, you are relying on what can be seen from the pavement. For an older or listed building in a place like Whitesmith, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so leaving a defect until it is urgent leaves less time to plan.
The cost of a survey depends on the roof: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Prices start from £150, including VAT.

Checking the roof from the ground
What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Surveys for landlords and agents in Whitesmith
We survey roofs for letting agents and landlords as well as homeowners. The report gives you a dated record of the gutter, with photos, useful for planning maintenance.
Letting agents frequently book on a landlord’s behalf, with the report sent to whoever needs it. Access is agreed with the tenant ahead of time.

Whitesmith questions
Do you cover smaller places like Whitesmith?
We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Whitesmith?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Will you look at parapet and box gutters as well?
Yes, as far as they can safely be seen. We look from vantage points, the loft space and the roof itself where safe, and by drone where it’s applicable.
What will the report tell me?
It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, backed by photos. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too, so you know exactly what was covered.
How much is a gutter survey?
Our packages start from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. For a price for your building, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.
Will you walk on the roof?
Not unless it’s safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.
Can a gutter survey explain damp on my walls?
Overflowing gutters frequently lead to damp walls, and the survey looks for that. If the evidence points elsewhere, we’ll say so as far as we can tell from what’s visible.
Roof by roof
Aluminium and other metal gutters
Long metal gutter runs on larger buildings can hide blocked outlets so outlets get close attention.
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
Plastic can become brittle with age and split. We check joints, brackets and the line of each run.
Gutter surveys in Whitesmith: local notes
About 3.5 miles south-east lies Michelham Priory, a reminder of how long the area around Whitesmith has been built on. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. In Sussex, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs, and oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of East Sussex’s older buildings. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.
The streets around a church like The Parish Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Chiddingly Primary School, long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle. If you own a rental within reach of Berwick (Sussex) station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak.

How it works
We look at the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there is safe access, from inside the roof space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. The whole visit typically takes about one to two hours for most houses, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. In a small place like Whitesmith, access is normally the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- We agree which parts of the building you’re most worried about.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
- Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
- You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.
Before we arrive
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- For flats, check roof access has been agreed
