How a gutter survey works in Woodlands

Leaves, moss and silt are the usual reasons gutters block. Buildings near trees collect more and moss from the roof slopes makes it worse. Our survey shows which gutters are blocked or standing full and where outlets or hoppers are choked and whether any overflows are doing their job. The photographs show you exactly what we found. It is an easy job to put off but it rarely improves. Common reasons to book are gutters full of debris and silt and leaks at the gutter joints, on downpipes, parapet and box gutters and eaves gutters.

Older buildings in small places like Woodlands may be listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is frequently expected.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Signs you need a gutter survey in Woodlands

Overflowing gutters in a downpour are a common reason to book. Others notice a damp wall, a stained ceiling or a green streak down the brickwork. The survey helps pin down the source before more damage is done.

People normally book a survey when they’ve noticed something like this:

  • Blocked outlets and hoppers
  • Water backing up from a hidden gutter
  • Soffits marked by water
  • Leaves and moss blocking gutters

If you own a rental within reach of Ashurst New Forest station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
  • Whether VAT is added on top
  • How soon the report will arrive
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?

What’s in a roof survey

Practical tips

Getting the most from a gutter survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:

  • Include valley, parapet and box gutters when clearing
  • Look for downpipes coming loose
  • Get the gutters cleaned out every year
  • Check for spilling water in a downpour

Where the evidence points to drains below ground, the report says so, so a drain survey can be arranged. We also note anything else we spot on the roof while we’re there.

Deal with drips, sags and loose downpipes early. Left alone, they usually grow, and the water they spill can damage walls and timber.

Woodlands questions

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Woodlands?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.

Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near Ashurst New Forest station?

Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the details, and we will talk through which survey suits.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only when it is safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.

Is a Saturday or Sunday visit possible?

Yes. Surveys are carried out on weekdays and at weekends. Just call 07833 053749 or drop us an email to arrange a day.

Is a CCTV drain survey included?

No, we do not carry out CCTV drain surveys. The survey covers gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows and note any sign that the drains need checking.

How experienced are you?

We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.

What’s the price of a gutter survey?

Prices start from £150, including VAT. The size of the property and the access affect the price. For a price, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.

How the survey changes by roof type

Plastic (uPVC) gutters

Joints that have pulled apart are a common fault on plastic gutters. The report notes every one we spot.

Box and secret gutters

A secret gutter is tucked under the slates or tiles at an abutment or valley and is easy to overlook. The report records what could and couldn’t be seen.

When you need someone else

No survey can tell you everything, and it’s better to know them up front. Bear these in mind:

  • Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards
  • Parts of gutters that cannot be seen safely
  • Underground drains, which need a CCTV drain survey

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before booking. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you get in touch and we’ll plan the visit with that in mind.

For blocks of flats, a roof survey helps managing agents and residents’ management companies plan ahead. Recommendations are set out in order of urgency where relevant, which helps with budgets and planning.

Gutter surveys in Woodlands: local notes

The coast is about 4 miles or less from Woodlands, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles. Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. Your council and Historic England’s list will tell you where you stand, before anyone quotes for re-roofing.

Anyone responsible for a site like Netley Marsh Church of England Infant School will know that large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.

What happens on the day

The visit has one job: to look at the gutter as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photographs go into the written report. It usually takes an hour or two for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Rural addresses near Woodlands can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.

  1. You tell us where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
  2. The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are looked at from ground level and windows.
  3. Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can be seen safely.
  4. Where it’s safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
  5. A written report with photos and recommendations follows.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Leave side gates unlocked
  • Check pets are kept safely away
