Getting in touch

You do not need to know any roofing terms. It’s enough to tell us:

  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
  • What’s prompted the survey
  • How the loft is reached, if there is one

We confirm the price for your survey before booking, so you know where you stand. Our price is from £150, including VAT. To book, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Roof leak investigation in Newchapel

Water is good at hiding where it gets in. It can run along a rafter, a batten or the underlay before it drips, so the stain on your ceiling is seldom right under the hole. We follow it back towards where it starts, one likely route at a time. Patching the spot above the stain frequently misses the real cause. Tracing the route first means any work can be aimed at the right place. If you’ve noticed water through the ceiling under a flat roof and wet patches on loft insulation, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

Somewhere as small as Newchapel, older roofs have frequently been repaired many times. A new leak may be fresh damage or the latest sign of long-term wear, which matters if you’re thinking of an insurance claim. We look at what can safely be seen and set out what we find. Older walls and timbers hold water for a long time, so it’s worth finding the cause soon.

Findings are set out part by part, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

Different roofs, different checks

Parapet and box gutters

Hidden gutters run behind parapets or between roofs. When their outlets block, water rises over the lining and runs indoors.

Flat roof upstands and outlets

Flat roof water can travel under the covering before it shows. Where conditions allow, moisture readings and thermal imaging help narrow it down.

The survey, step by step

Safety comes first on every visit. Everything that can be seen safely is inspected, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. Most visits take about one to two hours on an ordinary house, and more on a big or complicated roof. Somewhere like Newchapel needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect what can safely be seen, inside and out.

  1. You pick a Basic, Standard or Premium Survey.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
  3. We inspect inside and out, starting from the stain.
  4. Moisture detection and thermal imaging are used where your package includes them and they help.
  5. You get photos, the likely cause and clear recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Leave side gates unlocked
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • Leave a clear route to the loft

Wind, rain and roofs in Newchapel

Many older homes in Surrey have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts. Historic houses such as Saint Hill Manor, about 4 miles south, show how far back building in the area around Newchapel goes. If your house is among the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

Landlords with a home close to Dormans station may find that finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused. Trees in and around Centenary Fields shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching.

Newchapel is about 3 miles north-west of East Grinstead, in Surrey. We carry out roof leak investigations for homeowners, landlords and businesses in Newchapel and nearby. Our Surrey coverage includes Newchapel. We also survey roofs in Crawley.

Common questions in Newchapel

How do I find out if my home in Newchapel is listed?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Do you cover smaller places like Newchapel?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

We carry out surveys on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To find a day that suits you, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

How many surveys have you done?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. Our survey is not a structural engineer’s report. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we’ll recommend one.

Is the repair included in the leak investigation?

A leak investigation finds and reports the likely source. The repair is not part of it. The report shows where the water gets in and what should be done, which whoever carries out the work can follow.

Do you take photos of the roof?

Yes. Photographs are taken throughout the survey, and they go into the written report.

Do you need a roof leak investigation in Newchapel?

Every flat roof covering has a working life. Felt often lasts around 15 to 20 years, and as it ages it splits, blisters and opens at the laps. Leaks often start at the edges, upstands and outlets.

Problems we come across often include:

  • Stains around a skylight
  • Water through the ceiling under a flat roof
  • Drips from nail tips in a cold loft
  • Staining where a gutter or parapet meets the wall

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Imberhorne School, tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • What insurance they carry
  • How long the report takes to arrive
  • How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • What they will not be able to tell you

What a good roof survey covers

What we cannot see

Before you book, it is worth knowing what a survey won’t do:

  • Whether rotten timbers meet design loads
  • Defects hidden under coverings or inside walls without opening up
  • Leaks from plumbing, tanks or pipework rather than the roof

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll tell you before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What this survey covers

  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Chimney stacks
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Rooflights and dormers
  • The roof space
  • Lead flashings
  • Flat roof details

What you can safely check yourself

You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
