Roof leak investigation in Stud Green
Roof leaks rarely show up where you’d expect. Water often travels along timbers or underlay before it finds a way down, so the stain on your ceiling is seldom right under the hole. Our leak investigation traces it back, one likely route at a time. Patching the spot above the stain often misses the real cause. Finding the route first lets the repair go where it is needed. We are often asked to look into damp patches next to the stack and damp underlay across a wide area, on valleys and parapet gutters, lead flashings and slate and tile slopes.
Being in a small place like Stud Green makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. Tell us where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, along with any repairs done before. Photographs of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.
The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, each with a short note and a photo. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

What we look for on each type of roof
Slate and tile slopes
A gap in the coverings exposes the underlay. Ageing felt eventually lets water through.
Flat roof upstands and outlets
On a flat roof, a leak can show some distance from the split. Where conditions allow, moisture readings and thermal imaging help narrow it down.
The survey, step by step
Safety comes first on every visit. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. The survey usually takes roughly 1–2 hours, more where the leak is intermittent or the roof is large. Cottages and farmhouses around Stud Green frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- We start with what you’ve seen: where the stain is and when it gets worse.
- Inside, we check the damp area and the roof space above it.
- Outside, we look at every likely route in.
- We use moisture detection, and thermal imaging where it is useful.
- You receive a written report with photos showing the likely source and what needs attention.
Getting ready for the survey
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

What this survey cannot tell you
Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey can’t cover:
- Leaks from plumbing, tanks or pipework rather than the roof
- Whether rotten timbers meet design loads
- Carrying out the fix
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you. What a survey covers and does not.

Why act early in Stud Green
A leak rarely stays small. Wet timbers start to decay, plaster softens and insulation stops working. Finding the source early keeps the damage down. In a small place like Stud Green, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

How we price roof leak investigations
We confirm the price for your roof before you book. This is what makes a difference:
- The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
- House, block, shop or office
- Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
- Which survey package you book
Prices quoted always include VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Roof leak investigation starts from £150, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.
Helping us price your survey
You do not need to know any roofing terms. It is enough to tell us:
- Access details, like a loft hatch or a shared roof
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
Prices start from £150, including VAT. The exact figure depends on the roof and the package, and you can phone 07833 053749 or email us to find out.
FAQs for Stud Green
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Stud Green?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
Is Stud Green within the area you cover?
We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.
Do you look in the roof space?
Yes, where the survey calls for it and there is safe access. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement, as far as the space allows.
What should I do before you arrive?
Clear the loft hatch so we can get into the roof space. Gather any photos and notes about when it leaks, plus details of past repairs. Keep catching drips and keep water away from electrics.
Are you insured?
We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.
Does someone need to be in?
Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
Practical tips
You do not need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:
- Photograph the stain each time it appears
- Keep water away from lights and sockets
- Make sure the loft is accessible
- Stay off ladders and the roof
Once the work is done, hold on to the report. If the leak returns, it is a useful record of what was found.
Keep the loft space ventilated. Air movement keeps condensation down, which is often mistaken for a leak. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.
Leaks and storm damage in Stud Green
Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from. With Dorney Court about 2.7 miles east, Stud Green sits in an area with a long building history. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
If you own a rental within reach of Maidenhead station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. Trees in and around Ockwells Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls. If you look after a building such as Holyport College, tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back.
