Roof surveys in Brill

Roof survey in Brill: what you get

We survey roofs in Brill and across London and South East England. Visits run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. We are insured for professional indemnity and public liability, and bring 20+ years’ experience. You get a written report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. Whether it is a house, a flat or a commercial building, the process is the same. When you are ready to book, phone 07833 053749 or email us. We survey ridges, hips and valleys, clay and concrete tiles and chimney stacks, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are leaking gutter joints and downpipes and gaps in the roof where coverings have gone.

Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are often where weather gets in first.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What this survey can’t tell you

Before booking, it’s worth knowing what a survey won’t do:

  • An exact number of years the roof has left
  • Confirmation of asbestos in soffits or cement sheets
  • A structural engineer’s report

If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. What a survey covers and does not.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Chimney stacks
  • Natural slate
  • The roof space
  • Lead flashings
  • Flat roofs
  • Ridges, hips and valleys
  • Clay and concrete tiles

How it works

The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the roof space if there’s safe access. All told, expect about one to two hours for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. Older roofs in small places like Brill can have low, tight loft spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. We help you choose a Basic, Standard or Premium Survey.
  2. We arrive at the agreed time and talk through any concerns.
  3. We inspect and photograph every part of the roof we can safely see.
  4. Extra checks are carried out where your package includes them.
  5. The report is emailed with findings and recommendations.

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Brill

A number of Buckinghamshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Older houses in the South East frequently have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them. With Boarstall Tower about 1.9 miles west, Brill sits in an area with a long building history. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

The streets around a church such as United Reformed Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine. Anyone responsible for a site like Brill Church of England School will know that a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time.

Can I check my roof myself?

It is useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when you book and it will help the survey.

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

What we look for on each type of roof

Chimney stacks

Our chimney check is a visual inspection of the stack, and it isn’t a flue or gas safety check. If a specialist is needed, we’ll say so.

Concrete interlocking tiles

Concrete interlocking tiles are common on post-war and newer homes. They’re heavy and hard-wearing, but their surfaces weather over the years.
