What we look for on each type of roof

Clay plain and peg tiles

Older homes in the Weald and across the South East often have clay plain tiles, and some have Kent peg tiles held by pegs. When pegs or battens rot, tiles slip, leaving gaps along the courses.

Chimney stacks

We check the stack itself, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. If a specialist is needed, we’ll say so.

About our roof survey in Printstile

Our roof surveys cover Printstile and the wider South East. Visits run on weekdays and at weekends. We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance. You get a written report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. Houses, flats and commercial buildings all follow the same careful process. When you are ready to book, call 07833 053749 or send us an email. If you are worried about loose chimney pots and slates or tiles that have slipped or broken, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.

Older buildings in small places like Printstile may be listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Older materials such as clay tiles, slate and stone are often matched when work is done.

The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Tips from our surveys

A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They apply to most roofs:

  • Gather any paperwork for past roof work
  • Include dormers, porches and garages when you book
  • Keep a record of damp patches and dates
  • Keep the report with your property records

Any roofer you ask to quote can work from the report. The photos show what we found and where, which makes quotes easier to compare.

Have the roof surveyed every few years, and after major storms. Regular checks catch problems while they’re small. Each report gives a record to compare against.

Why get it checked now?

Without a survey, you are guessing at what the roof needs. That can lead to the wrong work being done, or miss the fault that matters. We tell you what’s really needed. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Printstile, driving rain gets into any weakness, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

Prices quoted always include VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Prices start from £150, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

The survey, step by step

We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. A typical visit takes between one and two hours at most homes, and more on a big or complicated roof. Rural addresses near Printstile can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. You get in touch with the address and anything you’ve noticed.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday or a weekend.
  3. The roof is inspected from the ground, windows, the loft and the roof itself where it’s safe.
  4. We check the coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters, and photograph what we find.
  5. Your report arrives by email, with recommendations prioritised by urgency.

Before we arrive

  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Let us know about parking near the property
  • If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent

What we’re asked to look at in Printstile

Blocked gutters cause a surprising amount of damage. Once leaves and moss block a gutter, water spills down the brickwork. Valley and parapet gutters can overflow inside the building.

Typical things we are asked to look at include:

  • Cracked or blistered flat roof coverings
  • Gaps in the roof where coverings have gone
  • Debris building up in roof valleys
  • Leaking gutter joints and downpipes

Anyone responsible for a site like St Gregory's Catholic School will know that long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.

What a roof survey looks like in Printstile

If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. Older houses across Kent often have handmade clay or peg tiles, and many have tile-hung walls. Oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of the county’s older buildings too. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.

Landlords with a home close to Leigh (Kent) station may find that a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant. Shop and office owners around Royal Victoria Place may find that knowing the roof’s condition lets you budget for work rather than pay for emergencies.

Questions from Printstile

Will you come out to Printstile?

Yes. Printstile is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

I let a flat near Leigh (Kent) station. Can you check the roof?

Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. Just call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the details.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning, with the building owner or managing agent. Mention it when you get in touch and we will explain what’s needed.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. We do not carry out asbestos surveys or testing. Where materials might contain it, we say so in the report and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

Will you climb onto the roof?

Only when it is safe. Many roofs can be seen well from windows, vantage points and the loft, and Premium includes a drone where applicable.

How much is a survey?

Roof survey starts from £150, including VAT. We confirm the price for the job before booking, and it depends on the roof’s size, access and the package you choose. To get a price, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Are you insured?

Every survey is covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.

What this survey can’t tell you

Before booking, it is worth knowing what a survey won’t do:

  • How the roof will behave in every kind of weather
  • Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
  • Confirmation of asbestos in soffits or cement sheets

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will recommend the right survey before you book. The full list of what we check.
