Roof survey in Puttock's End

We survey roofs in Puttock's End and across London and the South East. Visits run on weekdays and at weekends. We’re insured for professional indemnity and public liability. You get a written report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. Houses, flats and commercial buildings all follow the same careful process. To arrange a survey, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form. We’re often asked to look into debris building up in roof valleys and loose ridge or hip tiles, across ridges, hips and valleys, lead flashings and flat roofs.

Older buildings in small places like Puttock's End may be listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is often expected.

What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. It’s useful right away, and a good reference for later, for instance when you want to check whether anything has changed.

What we do, step by step

Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes an hour or two on an ordinary house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. If you have questions on the day, just ask. Cottages and farmhouses around Puttock's End often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.

  1. We help you choose a Basic, Standard or Premium Survey.
  2. We arrive at the agreed time and talk through any concerns.
  3. Coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are inspected and photographed.
  4. Moisture detection, a structural check, thermal imaging or a drone are added where your package includes them.
  5. The report is emailed with findings and recommendations.

Puttock's End: your questions answered

Are there drone restrictions around Puttock's End?

That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Puttock's End is inside, or right on the edge of, the flight restriction zone around Stansted Airport. Before any flight there, we ask the airport for permission, and the flight only goes ahead if it’s given. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, though the rest of the survey goes ahead either way.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Puttock's End?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Do you inspect the roof from on top?

Only where it is safe to do so. Much of the survey is done from ground level, upper windows and the loft space. The Premium Survey adds a drone where applicable.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. Access is agreed with you when booking.

Is Puttock's End in your area?

Yes. We cover Puttock's End and the rest of Essex. For a price, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

Surveys run on weekdays and at weekends. To arrange a date, call 07833 053749 or email us.

Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We look at the parts we’re given access to.

Honest limits

In fairness, a roof survey has limits:

  • A structural engineer’s report
  • How the roof will behave in every kind of weather
  • Faults hidden behind ceilings or boarding

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will point you to the right survey. The full list of what we check.

Checking the roof from the ground

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

What a roof survey looks like in Puttock's End

Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, with post-war and more recent estates making up much of the newer housing. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. The wider area around Puttock's End has a long history of building, with Barrington Hall about 1.9 miles south-west. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters.

Take a building like Takeley Primary School: its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. If you own a rental within reach of Stansted Airport station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Leaks rarely show up straight away. Damp spreads through insulation and timber before anything shows below. From inside the loft space, we can frequently spot it sooner. Outbuildings and barns around Puttock's End are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. It is worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before you book.

Tips that help

Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:

  • Take photos of any leaks as they happen
  • Include dormers, porches and garages as you book
  • Hold on to the report for future surveys
  • Look for debris in the garden after high winds

Any roofer you ask to quote can work from the report. They’ll see each defect and its location, so their quotes cover the same ground.

Have the roof surveyed every few years, and after major storms. Regular checks catch problems while they’re small. Compare each report with the last.
