How a roof survey works in Southwood
The report is written for you, in plain language. Each defect is described with photographs and a recommendation, and we rank them by urgency where that helps. With the Standard Survey you also get moisture detection and a structural check. Premium adds thermal imaging, a drone inspection where applicable and a same-day report. Each report is emailed to you. Typical surveys look at leaking gutter joints and downpipes and leaning or weathered chimney stacks, on natural slate, clay and concrete tiles and ridges, hips and valleys.
Around Southwood, older cottages sit alongside bungalows and newer houses. Coverings range from slate and clay tiles on older homes to concrete tiles on many later ones. On older homes, chimney stacks, valleys and gutters are normally where the work is, and the fixings under the coverings matter too. The fixings under an older roof frequently fail before good slates or tiles do.
Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters, with a note and a photo for each point. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Roof surveys in Southwood: local notes
A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. Farnborough Airport is about 2 miles from Southwood. If your survey includes the drone, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.
If you live in an older home near St John the Baptist, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. Take a building like Southwood Infant School: large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.
Southwood is about 1 mile west of Farnborough, in Hampshire. We provide roof surveys for homes and businesses in Southwood and the surrounding area. Across Hampshire, we cover Southwood. There’s also a page for Guildford.
Surveys in GU14 and GU51 are booked the same way as anywhere else. Whether your property is on Fleet Road, Kennels Lane and Summit Avenue or a nearby road, we can survey it. Nearby, we also carry out roof surveys in Cove (1 mile north), Farnborough (1 mile east), North Camp (2 miles east), Mytchett (3 miles east) and Aldershot (3 miles south-east). Within a short drive, we also cover Basingstoke (13 miles west), Alton (12 miles south-west), Yateley (4 miles north-west), Bordon (13 miles south), Hook (7 miles west) and Popley (12 miles west).
What’s near Southwood

Southwood’s nearest station is Fleet station, roughly 1.5 miles west of the centre. The countryside around Southwood includes Aunt's Pool and Ball Hill.
What we’re asked to look at in Southwood
Every roof takes years of rain, wind, sun and frost. Wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, while rain gets into every gap. What starts as one slipped slate can become a leak.
We are often asked to look at:
- Flashings that have come away from the wall
- Water stains on rafters and ceiling joists
- Leaking gutter joints and downpipes
- Cracked or blistered flat roof coverings
If you live near a park such as Ancells Farm Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall.

Questions from Southwood
Do you cover smaller places like Southwood?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Southwood?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Do you go up on the roof?
Where it is safe, yes. Much of the survey is done from ground level, upper windows and the loft space. On Premium, a drone is used where it applies.
Is a roof survey the same as a structural survey?
No. Our survey looks at the condition of the roof, and the Standard and Premium packages include a structural check. It isn’t a structural engineer’s report and does not include calculations.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Yes, where it is applicable. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, if whoever owns or manages the building agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we are allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
Why it is worth a survey now in Southwood
Roof faults rarely stay the same size. A single gap lets water onto the timbers underneath, and wet timber starts to decay. Finding it early keeps the work smaller. Homes in smaller places like Southwood can face more weather, so a loose ridge or verge soon lets rain in. Wind gets under it and lifts more.
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before you book.

How we price roof surveys
All our prices include VAT. The things that change the price are:
- Building height and the viewpoints available
- Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
- Roof area
Price depends partly on the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all with VAT included. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.
Booking your survey
A little information up front helps. Please include:
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- The property’s address and postcode
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- Any deadline, such as an exchange date
Every survey is priced before it’s booked, so you know where you stand. Our price is from £150, including VAT. To book, call 07833 053749 or email us.
How the survey works
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. All in, the survey usually takes between one and two hours at most homes, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. A visit to Southwood is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed ahead of time. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.
- You let us know the address, the type of roof and what’s worrying you.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
- Outside, we inspect from ground level, windows and other safe vantage points, and from the roof where safe.
- We then look in the loft for damp, staining and the condition of the underlay.
- We email a photo-illustrated written report and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Leave side gates unlocked

Natural slate
Many Victorian and Edwardian houses have slate roofs. Where several slates have slipped, the cause is often nail fatigue, and we say how widespread it looks.
