Roof survey in North Camp

Roof coverings last a long time, but not for ever. Natural slate can last 100 years or more, and clay and concrete tiles commonly 50 years or more, yet nails, battens and underlay frequently fail first. We tell you which parts are ageing and which are sound. That lets you plan work in good time rather than after a leak. If you’re worried about blocked, sagging or leaking gutters and torn or sagging underlay, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

Around North Camp, older cottages sit alongside bungalows and newer houses. Coverings range from slate and clay tiles on older homes to concrete tiles on many later ones. Chimneys, valleys and gutters on older homes frequently need the most attention. The fixings under an older roof frequently fail before good slates or tiles do.

Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it is clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

How the survey works

Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes an hour or two for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. Parking around North Camp is usually easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from ground level, with the loft showing the underside.

  1. We start with the property details and any concerns.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
  3. We check the roof from each safe vantage point outside.
  4. We then look in the loft for damp, staining and the condition of the underlay.
  5. You receive the report with photos and recommendations, prioritised by urgency.

Advice

North Camp questions

Is my home in North Camp listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.

Is drone flying allowed in North Camp?

The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. North Camp is about 2 miles from Farnborough Airport, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, though the rest of the survey goes ahead either way.

How much is a survey?

Our price is from £150, including VAT. You will know the price for your survey before booking. For a price, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain asbestos. We flag materials that could contain it, and a specialist asbestos surveyor should check them.

Does the weather affect the survey?

Some surveys depend on the weather more than others. Drones can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with a dry roof, little wind and a sunny day beforehand. If the conditions aren’t right, we’ll talk to you about another date.

How long does a roof survey take?

The visit usually takes an hour or two for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. We’ll give you an idea of timing when you book.

How soon is the report ready?

The Premium Survey has a same-day report, Standard 24 to 48 hours and Basic within 48 hours. Photos are included.

Leave it or get it looked at?

A small roof defect normally gets bigger. A single gap lets water onto the timbers underneath, and wet timber starts to decay. Catching it early means less to put right. Tradespeople may need to travel further to a smaller place like North Camp, so it helps to plan roof work rather than call someone out in a hurry. Knowing early gives you time to get the right people in.

Prices quoted always include VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Roof survey starts from £150, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

Roof surveys around North Camp

Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters. Farnborough Airport is about 2 miles from North Camp. If the drone is used for your survey, the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions first.

Landlords with a home close to North Camp station may find that knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints. Homes near green spaces such as Ramillies Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall. The streets around a church like St Mark are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.

Tips that help

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out as worth the effort:

  • File the report with your home documents
  • Check we can open the loft hatch
  • Do not climb onto the roof yourself
  • Have details of recent roof work to hand

Any roofer you ask to quote can work from the report. They’ll see each defect and its location, so their quotes cover the same ground.

Look at your roof from the ground after strong winds. Slipped slates, lifted ridge tiles or pieces in the garden are signs something has moved. Getting small faults fixed quickly keeps water out.

What we can’t see

Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:

  • Confirmation of asbestos in soffits or cement sheets
  • A full building survey of the property
  • A promise that the roof will not leak in future

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll tell you. What our survey covers.

Different roofs, different checks

Lead flashings and valleys

Most leaks begin at a joint rather than the middle of a slope. They get particular attention in every survey.

Natural slate

Natural slate can last 100 years or more, yet the nails holding it frequently fail long before the slate. We check for slipped, cracked and missing slates.
