Thermal imaging roof survey in Southwood, Hampshire
Get a clear view of the roof at a property in Southwood. Visits run on weekdays and weekends, in the daytime.
- Water getting in at parapets and stacks
- Wet areas near outlets and upstands
- Leaks far from where the stain appears
What a thermal roof survey doesn’t cover
Every survey has limits, and it is better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:
- The condition of timbers we can’t see
- Insulation values or heat loss calculations
- Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer

Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Southwood
Thermal imaging can also show where a roof is losing heat. Missing or slipped insulation and gaps at the eaves often show up as temperature differences. It works best when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. Our report points out what the images suggest and where to look more closely. We don’t give energy ratings or heat loss calculations. If you’ve noticed cold areas below the roof and thin or uneven insulation in the roof, we can find out what’s behind it.
In smaller places like Southwood, many homes are bungalows and houses with roofs you can partly see from the ground. Chimney tops, valleys and rear slopes are where close-up or thermal images help most. Both depend on the weather on the day, as calm, dry conditions suit both. Close-up images often show wear on ridges, verges and flashings that can’t be judged properly from the ground.
We write the report in plain English, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photos show what each point refers to.

When to book a survey in Southwood
Flat roofs that have leaked for a while can have wet insulation under the covering. Knowing how much of the roof is affected helps decide between a local repair and more. A thermal survey, checked with moisture readings, can give a much clearer picture.
Signs worth acting on include:
- Damp around roof outlets and upstands
- Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
- Areas of a flat roof that may hold water
- Leaks that are hard to trace
Take a building like Southwood Infant School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.
Questions to ask before booking
- Whether the roof space is looked at, where there is one
- Their report turnaround times
- Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
- What the report includes, and whether it has photographs
Practical tips
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out as worth the effort:
- Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
- Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
- Heat the home normally on the days before
- Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
You also get an in-person consultation with a Premium Survey, giving you the chance to talk through the images and findings. There is a 12-month follow-up too.
After repairs or a new covering, a later survey can confirm things are dry, when the conditions are suitable.
FAQs for Southwood
Is my home in Southwood listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Is Southwood within the area you cover?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
When does the report arrive?
Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. Each one is emailed.
Will the survey show heat loss through my roof?
Thermal images can suggest where heat is escaping and where insulation may be missing. We don’t give energy ratings or heat loss calculations, but the images show where improvements may help.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first. Let us know about it as you book and we will explain what’s needed.
Is thermal imaging useful on pitched roofs?
It can help, but the results are often less clear than on a flat roof. Slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s below, so we combine it with an inspection from the loft where there is safe access.
Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?
No, not on its own. It shows surface temperature, and wet areas can show up because they hold heat differently. That’s why we check any patterns with moisture readings.
What a survey costs
Survey packages start from £150, inc. VAT. The price for your roof depends on:
- House, block, shop or office
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
- The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
- Roof area
One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all with VAT included. Size, height and access can affect the price too.
What to let us know when you get in touch
You don’t need to know any roofing terms. Just let us know:
- Dates you are working to, such as exchange
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
- The address and postcode of the property
Buyers should book once an offer has been accepted, so there’s time to use the report before exchange. For any other survey, just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email when you are ready.
What we do, step by step
Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. The whole visit usually takes about one to two hours at most homes, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Homes around Southwood often have gardens on more than one side, which gives us room to step back and see the roof. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. The loft, where there is safe access, completes the picture.
- First we go over the roof, the problem you’ve noticed and the conditions forecast for the visit.
- We check the roof from the ground, from windows and from the roof itself where it’s safe.
- Thermal images are taken to show differences in surface temperature.
- Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
- The report sets out the images, what they suggest and what we recommend.
Preparing for the visit
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at

Advice
Drones, thermal imaging and Southwood roofs
Southwood is about 2 miles from Farnborough Airport. If the drone is used for your survey, the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions first. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so check with the council.
If you run a business near Hart Shopping Centre, a commercial roof can be photographed from above without anyone walking on it. If you live in an older home near St John the Baptist, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.
Southwood is about 1 mile west of Farnborough, in Hampshire. Southwood is one of many places we visit across Hampshire, for homes and businesses alike. We cover towns and villages across Hampshire. There’s also a page for Guildford.
All of GU14 and GU51 is covered for thermal roof surveys, from the main roads to the quietest streets. Different roofs, different checks
Pitched slate and tile roofs
From inside the loft, the camera can help with damp around chimneys, valleys and roof windows. We check any patterns with moisture readings.
Loft insulation
Loft insulation is easily disturbed when people store things or run cables. The camera can show where it no longer covers the ceiling.
