Storm damage roof report in Eastling

When a storm has damaged your roof, a written record can help you explain it to your insurer. We photograph the damage, describe it and note whether it fits storm damage, older wear or both. We are not loss adjusters, and we cannot say whether a claim will be paid. What you get is an independent view of the roof’s condition. If you’ve noticed roofs hit by falling trees and damaged gutters and fascias, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

Roofs in small places like Eastling frequently stand in the open, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A record with photographs is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.

Most points in the report come with a picture, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Leave it or get it looked at?

The sooner the damage is recorded, the clearer the evidence. Further storms and quick fixes can make the picture less clear. Older cottages and farmhouses around Eastling can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.

Prices start from £150, with VAT included, for a Basic Survey. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, both including VAT. You’ll know the price for your survey before booking.

How the survey works

Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available. A typical visit takes between one and two hours at a typical home, or half a day or so for a commercial building. In a small place like Eastling, access is normally the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. You tell us when the storm was and what damage you’ve seen.
  2. We inspect the roof from safe viewpoints and from the loft where there’s access.
  3. We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
  4. The likely cause is recorded, along with any evidence of older wear.
  5. You get a written report you can pass to your insurer.

Before the survey

  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
  • Keep pets in another room

Advice

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That part is for a survey.

Practical tips

You do not need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:

  • Photograph damage inside the house too
  • File receipts for anything you pay for
  • Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in
  • Check your policy for how to report damage

After the visit, we write up the report with photographs of each area of damage. It sets out what is damaged, the likely cause and any signs of older wear. Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24 to 48 hours and Premium reports the same day.

Check the roof from ground level after strong winds. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or lifted ridges. Never climb onto the roof yourself.

What we look for on each type of roof

Slate roofs

Broken slates and slates that have slid out of place are common after a storm. We photograph and describe each one.

Chimney stacks

Wind can pull the flashings away from a chimney. We photograph any we find.

Eastling questions

Is Eastling within the area you cover?

Yes, Eastling is covered. We work right across London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Do you cover Eastling?

Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and Eastling is part of that. You can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and a few details.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.

Is there a set wind speed for storm damage?

There is no single figure. Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies. Check your policy wording.

Will you check the loft?

If it is needed and safe to reach, yes. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging.

Does your report mean my claim will be accepted?

Only your insurer can decide that. Our report records what is damaged, with photos, and the likely cause, for you to give to your insurer.

Who handles emergency protection after a storm?

Call a roofer for emergency temporary protection. If it is safe, photograph the damage before it’s covered. Keep receipts in case your insurer asks for them.

Storm damage roof reports in Eastling: local notes

Many older homes in Kent have handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles held by pegs through two holes, and tile-hanging on their upper walls. Kent’s older buildings take in oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses as well. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in. With Belmont House and Gardens about 1.4 miles east, Eastling sits in an area with a long building history. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead.

The streets around a church like Church of St Mary are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in. For landlords with property near Teynham station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Eastling Primary School, a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside.
