Independent storm damage roof reports in Farnborough

Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Farnborough

A storm damage roof report is an independent record of the damage to your roof after a storm. We record each area of damage, photograph it and note the likely cause. It is yours to pass to your insurer. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. We aren’t loss adjusters and can’t say whether a claim will be paid. If you’re worried about loose or torn flashings and broken or displaced guttering, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.

In London, leaks often start somewhere hidden: a butterfly roof’s central valley gutter, a parapet gutter, a chimney flashing or a flat roof over a back addition. Whether you’re tracing a leak or recording storm damage in Farnborough, those are among the first places to look. A hidden gutter that overflows can send water a long way before it shows.

You can share the report with anyone who needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent.

How the survey works

The visit has one job: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. It usually takes between one and two hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. In a London conversion, the way into the roof space is often from a communal landing or the top flat. If that applies to your building, it’s useful to agree access with the neighbours or the managing agent first. Otherwise, the visit in Farnborough runs like any other.

  1. We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
  2. We look at the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. We record and photograph the damage.
  4. We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
  5. We send you the report by email for your insurer.

Why it’s worth a survey now in Farnborough

A few slipped slates can soon lead to wet timbers. Getting it recorded and repaired sooner is usually better. Work on a London roof is rarely simple to arrange, with parking, neighbours and access all to think about. That is a good reason to find problems early, while there’s time to plan.

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before you book.

Leaks and storm damage in Farnborough

Alongside Victorian and Edwardian terraces, outer London has a great many interwar semis, often with hipped roofs of clay or concrete tiles. Bay roofs, hip ridges and dormers from later loft conversions are the details that set these houses apart. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it is detailed. Historic houses like Down House, about 2.1 miles south-west, show how far back building in the area around Farnborough goes. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead.

If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of St Giles the Abbot, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in. Landlords with a home close to Orpington station may find that tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it. Homes near green spaces such as South Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn.

Farnborough is about 2 miles south-west of Orpington, in Greater London. We provide storm damage roof reports for homeowners, landlords and businesses in Farnborough. Our Greater London coverage includes Farnborough. For surveys nearby, see our London page.

Farnborough: your questions answered

Is Farnborough in the area you cover?

Yes. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and Farnborough is part of that. You can phone 07833 053749 or email us with the address and some details, and we will talk through which survey suits.

How do I find out if my home in Farnborough is listed?

We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we are allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.

How long is the visit?

Expect it to take between one and two hours at most homes, and more on a big or complicated roof. The written report follows by email.

How experienced are you?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.

What this survey cannot tell you

No survey can tell you everything, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Bear these in mind:

  • What’s beneath slates, tiles or membranes
  • Repair costs or quotes for the work
  • Negotiating a claim settlement

If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. What our survey covers.

What we look at

  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs
  • Ridges and hips
  • Flashings
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Slate and tile slopes

Useful tips for Farnborough property owners

A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • Keep invoices for temporary repairs
  • Hold on to fallen pieces of the roof where you can
  • Write down when the storm hit and when you noticed damage
  • Photograph the damage safely from below

For repair costs, ask a roofer to quote. They can use our report to see what needs doing.

Check the roof from the ground after strong winds. With binoculars, you can frequently spot problems without climbing. Don’t go up a ladder to look.
