Drone roof survey in Farnborough: what you get

We fly a sub-250g drone, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. It stays within sight for the whole flight, and within the 120-metre limit that applies to all drones in the open category. Every flight is planned around the roof, the site and the people nearby. Before every flight, we check the airspace and the weather. We never fly where it is not safe. Typical surveys look at lifted or split lead flashings and blocked valleys and parapet gutters, on flat roofs on upper floors, valleys and parapet gutters and large and complex roofs.

Flying in London takes more checking than most places: there are flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Before a drone goes up in Farnborough, the address is checked against all of them, and permission is never taken for granted.

The report does not just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend.

Prices for drone roof surveys in Farnborough

To price your survey, we look at:

  • How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
  • Basic, Standard or Premium

We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you need to know.

Helping us price your survey

We’ll typically ask about:

  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date
  • The type of building and roof, such as pitched or flat
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them

Our phone lines are open seven days a week, including Saturdays and Sundays. For a price or to book, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Different roofs, different checks

Valleys and parapet gutters

A butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter. It is almost impossible to see from ground level, but it’s plain to see from the air.

Large commercial roofs

Fragile roof sheets and roof lights can be dangerous to walk on. A drone keeps everyone off them.

What happens on the day

The aim of the visit is simple: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. It usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. In a London conversion, the way into the roof space is frequently from a communal landing or the top flat. Where that is the case, access needs agreeing with whoever controls that landing. Otherwise, the visit in Farnborough runs like any other.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • Show us where any leaks or stains appear
  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at

Common questions in Farnborough

Is parking a problem for a survey in Farnborough?

London parking needs a little planning, so let us know about permits, bays or a driveway when booking. The visit is then planned around what’s available.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Farnborough?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Will you walk on the roof?

Not always. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where it applies let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. It’s a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof, so it sits alongside a building survey rather than replacing it.

What happens after the survey?

You’ll get the report by email, with photographs and clear recommendations. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.

How quickly is the report sent?

It depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. The report is emailed to you.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning. Mention it when you contact us and we will plan the survey around it.

What we’re asked to look at in Farnborough

Large roofs take a long time to see on foot. A drone can photograph a large roof methodically, showing patterns of wear that are hard to spot up close. That gives a clearer picture of the roof as a whole.

A survey can pick up problems such as:

  • Moss building up on slopes and in gutters
  • Outlets choked with leaves and silt
  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
  • Flashings that have come away

If you run a business near The Mall, big, flat commercial roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images help most.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • What insurance they carry
  • How long they’ve been surveying roofs
  • Their report turnaround times

What a roof survey includes

Drones, thermal imaging and Farnborough roofs

Farnborough is about 3 miles from Biggin Hill Airport, so the Drone Safety Map is checked for restrictions around it before we fly. Outer London has lots of Victorian and Edwardian terraces with slate roofs, but also a great many interwar semis, often with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles. Hips, bay roofs and later loft conversions are typical of those semis, if your home is one of them. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Farnborough Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. The streets around a church like Church of St Giles the Abbot are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Practical tips

A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They apply to most roofs:

  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit
  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
  • Let us know about any leaks or concerns
  • Expect a little longer if permission is needed

With the Premium Survey, the report arrives the same day. It includes the drone photos where a flight was possible, alongside the other checks in the package.

Keep the roof space ventilated. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation, and it’s something only an inside check will show. Check insulation doesn’t block the airflow.
