Storm Damage Roof Report in Hindhead
We carry out storm damage roof reports in Hindhead and the rest of Surrey. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
- Roofs hit by falling trees
- Slipped or missing slates or tiles
- Cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind
Different roofs, different checks
Slate roofs
Natural slate can last 100 years or more, but the nails often fail first. We check whether slipped slates suggest storm damage, older wear or both.
Chimney stacks
High winds can loosen pots, cowls and aerials on stacks. We record any damage we can see.
Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Hindhead
If your roof has been damaged, stay safe first. Photograph the damage from ground level or a window, and never climb up. Emergency temporary protection, like covering an opening, is a job for a roofer. We then record the damage in a report you can pass to your insurer. Keep receipts for any emergency work. We’re often asked to look into loose or torn flashings and slipped or missing slates or tiles, on flashings, slate and tile slopes and flat roofs.
Many homes in small places like Hindhead face open ground, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Damp in old stone, brick or timber walls is slow to dry out, so it pays to find the cause quickly. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.
It is not only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend.

What this survey can’t tell you
It helps to know what a survey won’t do before you book:
- Areas we cannot see safely
- Repair costs or quotes for the work
- Whether your insurer will pay the claim
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What we check
- Gutters and fascias
- Ridges and hips
- Slate and tile slopes
- Flashings
- Flat roofs
- Chimney stacks
Can I check my roof myself?
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
What we’re asked to look at in Hindhead
Insurers often want evidence of what has been damaged and why. A written report with photos gives you something clear to pass on. The decision still rests with the insurer.
Look out for signs like these:
- Lead lifted at abutments
- Loose or broken chimney pots and cowls
- Holes or cracks caused by debris
- New damp or leaks inside
If you look after a building like St Edmund's School, a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside.
Questions to ask before booking
- Whether the loft is part of the inspection
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
- Are they insured for the work?

What a storm damage roof report looks like in Hindhead
In Surrey, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, with tile-hanging on many upper walls. A few of Surrey’s oldest buildings have heavy Horsham stone slab roofs. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in. England has around 10,000 conservation areas and about 500,000 listed buildings. If your home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission, so check with the council.
If you own a rental within reach of Haslemere station, a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer right away. If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near Church of St Luke, the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself.

Hindhead: your questions answered
Is my home in Hindhead listed or in a conservation area?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.
Is Hindhead within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it’s disturbed.
Do you look in the loft space?
Yes, where the survey calls for it and there is safe access. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging.
Does someone need to be in?
It depends on what we need to see. For inside areas and the loft space, someone has to give us access, while outside access can be discussed as you book.
Is there a set wind speed for storm damage?
There is no single figure. Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies. Check your policy wording.
Do you act for me with my insurer?
No. We write an independent report, and you decide how to use it. The insurer may send a loss adjuster of its own.
What happens on the day
The visit normally starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the loft space if there is safe access. In total, it takes an hour or two for a house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Rural addresses near Hindhead can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
- The roof is inspected from safe positions.
- Each area of damage is photographed and described.
- We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
- We send you the report by email for your insurer.
Before the survey
- Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- Keep pets in another room
