FAQs for Holton Hill

Is my home in Holton Hill listed or in a conservation area?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Will you come out to Holton Hill?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Do you look in the loft space?

Yes, where the survey calls for it and there’s safe access. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging, as far as the space allows.

How experienced are you?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes, if the building owner or managing agent agrees access. We check the parts we are given access to, and the report makes that clear.

Is there a set wind speed for storm damage?

Each policy has its own definition. About 55 mph is a common figure in many policies, but check your own wording.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Where it helps and it’s safe, yes. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.

Storm damage roof report in Holton Hill

If your roof has been damaged, stay safe first. Photograph the damage from the ground or a window, and never climb up. If water is coming in, a roofer can put temporary protection in place. We then record the damage in a report you can pass to your insurer. Keep receipts for any emergency work. If you’ve noticed roofs hit by falling trees and loose or broken chimney pots and cowls, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

Many homes in small places like Holton Hill face open ground, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A record with photographs is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What a survey costs

Survey packages start from £150, including VAT. What you pay for your roof depends on:

  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
  • The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
  • The size of the roof
  • Building height and the viewpoints available

One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all with VAT included. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

Booking your survey

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Where the property is, with the postcode
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • Whether there’s a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors

Once you know what you need, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email. From there it is a case of choosing a package, agreeing the price and fixing a day, weekday or weekend.

The survey, step by step

The visit has one job: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Around Holton Hill, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.

  1. You let us know what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. We view the roof from safe positions.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Before we arrive

  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
  • Jot down any questions you want answered
  • If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent

What a storm damage roof report does not cover

To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:

  • Acting for you with the insurer
  • What’s beneath slates, tiles or membranes
  • A decision on your insurance claim

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will point you to the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.

Wind, rain and roofs in Holton Hill

The wider area around Holton Hill has a long history of building, with Bateman's about 0.9 miles south-east. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead. In Sussex, older roofs are frequently handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings, alongside oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from.

For landlords with property near Stonegate station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. Take a building like Burwash CofE School: on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain.

Useful tips for Holton Hill property owners

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out:

  • Check how your policy defines a storm
  • Photograph the damage safely from below
  • Keep invoices for temporary repairs
  • Record any water damage in rooms and the loft

You’ll need a roofer’s quote for the repairs. They can use our report to see what needs doing.

Clear gutters and outlets before the stormy months. Blocked drainage can add water damage to wind damage.

When to book a survey in Holton Hill

Some people book because a claim has been questioned. You get an independent record of what the roof shows. What happens next is up to the insurer.

Most people get in touch after spotting something like this:

  • Lead lifted at abutments
  • Damaged ridges and hips
  • Torn or lifted flat roof coverings
  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone

If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near The Parish Church of St Bartholomew, old mortar, worn lead and slipped slates are the usual suspects when water gets in.

Questions to ask before you book

  • If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
  • Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
  • Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
  • What’s outside the scope of the survey

How the survey changes by roof type

Slate roofs

Broken slates and slates that have slid out of place are common after a storm. We photograph and describe each one.

Lead flashings

Old flashings that were already loose can give way in a storm. We record what looks recent and what looks older.
