How a storm damage roof report works in Hookwood

If your roof has been damaged, stay safe first. Photograph the damage from ground level or a window, and never climb up. If water is coming in, a roofer can put temporary protection in place. We then record the damage in a report you can pass to your insurer. Hold on to receipts for anything you pay for. We survey flat roofs, ridges and hips and flashings, and common reasons people get in touch are slates and tiles blown off the roof and cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind.

Being in a small place like Hookwood makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. Tell us where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, plus any earlier repairs. If you have photographs of the water coming in, they help as well.

If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

What we look for on each type of roof

Chimney stacks

Older stacks with worn pointing or cracked flaunching are more likely to suffer. Our report notes recent damage and older defects.

Flat roof coverings

Lifted trims and laps are common after a storm. The report notes signs of recent damage and older wear.

Storm damage roof reports around Hookwood

Older houses across Surrey often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging. Some old buildings in Surrey and Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in. England has around 10,000 conservation areas and about 500,000 listed buildings. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so the council is the place to ask.

If you run a hotel or guest house in or near Hookwood, a roof problem can mean rooms out of use. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Manorfield Primary and Nursery School, on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain. If you live in an older home near Church of St Bartholomew, leaks on older roofs frequently start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.

Hookwood is about 1 mile south-west of Horley, in Surrey. We visit Hookwood as part of our work across Surrey, for homes and businesses alike. Hookwood is one of the places in Surrey where we work.

DIY checks: what’s safe

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in.

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Honest limits

Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • What’s beneath slates, tiles or membranes
  • Your insurer’s view of the claim
  • A decision on your insurance claim

If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flashings
  • Ridges and hips
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Flat roofs

How the survey works

On the day, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you need to know. After that, we look at everything we can see safely. The survey typically takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Rural addresses near Hookwood can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. We start with the details: when the storm hit and what damage you can see.
  2. We view the roof from wherever it can safely be seen, including the loft where there’s access.
  3. We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
  4. We note the likely cause, including any signs of wear that were there before the storm.
  5. You get a written report you can pass to your insurer.

Hookwood questions

Is Hookwood in the area you cover?

Yes. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and Hookwood is part of that. You can call 07833 053749 or email us with the address and some details, and we will talk through which survey suits.

Is Hookwood within the area you cover?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.

Do I need to be at home?

It depends on what we need to see. For inside areas and the loft space, someone has to give us access; we’ll agree the details when you book.

What wind speed counts as a storm?

It depends on your policy. Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies. Your policy document will say.

Will my insurer pay for an old roof?

Wear and tear is typically excluded from home insurance. We note both storm damage and older defects, so it’s clear what we found. Your insurer decides how its policy applies.

What if my insurer declines the claim?

Complain to your insurer first. After that, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to look at it. An independent report can add to your evidence, but we cannot say how it will turn out.

Should I go up on the roof to take photos?

Stay off the roof. Take photos from the ground or from windows. Note the date and time, and photograph any damage inside.

Practical tips

A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:

  • Check how your policy defines a storm
  • Keep a note of the date of the storm
  • Get a roofer to make the roof safe if needed
  • Keep fallen slates or tiles as evidence if safe

For repair costs, ask a roofer to quote. They can use our report to see what needs doing.

Check the roof from ground level after strong winds. With binoculars, you can often spot problems without climbing. Do not go up a ladder to look.
