How a storm damage roof report works in Oval
The Financial Ombudsman looks at three things when it considers a storm damage complaint: whether there were storm conditions around the date, whether the damage fits a storm, and whether the storm was the main cause. Our report focuses on the second and third points. You or your insurer can check the weather for the date. If you’re worried about loose or torn flashings and gutters pulled loose in the wind, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Many London homes are well over a century old and their roofs have been patched more than once, so a new leak can be the latest sign of wear rather than a single event. Insurers usually exclude wear and tear, so it’s useful to know whether damage is old or new. A careful look in Oval tells the two apart where the evidence allows. A written record with photos helps you explain what was found to whoever deals with it next.
How fast the report arrives depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Share it with us when you book.
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight.

Roof by roof
Lead flashings
Lifted flashings let rain run behind them into the roof. We note where this has happened and any damp inside.
Clay and concrete tiles
Tiles can lift, crack or blow off in high winds. We record which are damaged and where.
When you need someone else
We only report everything that’s safely in view on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- Areas we cannot see safely
- Estimates of repair costs
- The outcome of a claim
If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and does not.

Common questions in Oval
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Oval?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Is Oval in the area you cover?
We do. The survey and report are the same in Oval as anywhere else.
How strong does the wind have to be for a storm claim?
There’s no single figure. Many use gusts of about 55 mph, but each policy sets its own definition. Check your policy wording.
Should I go up on the roof to take photos?
Please do not climb onto the roof. Take photos from ground level or from windows. Note the date and time, and photograph any damage inside.
How many surveys have you done?
We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.
What’s the best way to book?
Just call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day, weekday or weekend.
How are storm damage reports priced?
Our reports start from £150. Commercial and larger roofs are quoted on size. Repair costs are not part of the report.
Storm damage roof reports in Oval: local notes
Buckingham Palace, about 1.7 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Oval. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. Inner London’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces often have Welsh slate roofs. Behind many of their parapets sit butterfly roofs and valley gutters that can’t be seen from the pavement. Lead flashings, party-wall upstands and shared chimney stacks are typical of these houses, if yours is one of them. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it is detailed.
Landlords with a home close to Vauxhall station may find that tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it. Anyone responsible for a site like St Stephen's Church of England Primary School will know that tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back. If you live near a park such as Vauxhall Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching.

Landlords, agents and block managers in Oval
Letting agents frequently book on a landlord’s behalf, with the report sent to whoever needs it. Access is agreed with the tenant in advance.
If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, which helps when tenants work during the week.
Before and after the survey
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out as worth the effort:
- Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in
- File receipts for anything you pay for
- Photograph damage inside the house too
- Keep fallen slates or tiles as evidence if safe
After the visit, we write up the report with photos of each area of damage. It sets out what is damaged, the likely cause and any signs of older wear. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.
Keep the roof in good order between storms. Have loose slates, tiles and flashings seen to promptly.
The survey, step by step
Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from each safe vantage point, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. Most visits take an hour or two at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Many London properties are flats or terraces with no side access, so rear slopes are viewed from windows, the loft or, where a flight is allowed, by drone. If the building has a managing agent or access rules, tell us when booking.
- You tell us what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
- We check inside, including the loft where there is access, for water damage.
- The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it is safe.
- We record fresh damage and older defects.
- You receive the written report with photos.
Before we arrive
- Point out any leaks or damp patches
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Tell us where we can park nearby
