Independent storm damage roof reports in West Horsley

Leave it or get it looked at?

A few slipped slates can soon lead to wet timbers. Getting it recorded and repaired sooner is usually better. In a smaller place like West Horsley, wherever a roof is exposed, a loose ridge or flashing does not stay loose for long. Wind gets under it and lifts more, and water follows.

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. You will know the figure before booking.

About our storm damage roof report in West Horsley

The Financial Ombudsman asks three questions when it looks at storm complaints: whether there were storm conditions around the date, whether the damage fits a storm, and whether the storm was the main cause. We record what the roof shows about the damage and its likely cause. Weather records for the date are for you or your insurer to check. If you are worried about ridge tiles that have come loose and damaged gutters and fascias, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

In older homes around places like West Horsley, the underlay may be old bitumen felt, or there may be none at all. Once the slates or tiles let water past, there’s little to stop it reaching the ceiling. Whether it is long-term wear or recent damage makes a difference to what happens next. Wet battens and insulation in the loft are often the first clue.

Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

The survey, step by step

After the inspection, everything we found is written up in a report with photographs, emailed to you. On timing, most surveys take about one to two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. A visit to a smaller place like West Horsley is no different on the day: we look from ground level, from windows, from the loft and from the roof where it’s safe. It helps to show us anything you’ve already noticed.

  1. You tell us what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there is access, for water damage.
  3. The roof is inspected from ground level, windows and the roof where it’s safe.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. You receive the written report with photographs.

West Horsley: your questions answered

Do you carry out roof surveys in West Horsley?

We do. The survey and report are the same in West Horsley as anywhere else.

Do you cover smaller places like West Horsley?

Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them.

Does someone need to be in?

It depends on what we need to see. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in, while outside access can be discussed when you book.

How should I record storm damage myself?

Stay off the roof. Photograph the damage from below or from a window. Note the date and time, and photograph any damage inside.

How many surveys have you done?

We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Let us know which days suit you as you book.

Landlord and commercial surveys in West Horsley

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work.

Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it when booking and we will plan the visit with that in mind.

DIY checks: what’s safe

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

What we are asked to look at in West Horsley

Strong winds lift loose or poorly fixed slates and tiles, ridge pieces and flashings. Rain can then blow in where slates or tiles have gone. People typically call us after a storm, once they’ve noticed damage or a leak.

Things that frequently lead to a survey include:

  • New damp or leaks inside
  • Torn or lifted flat roof coverings
  • Roofs hit by falling trees
  • Ridge tiles that have come loose

If you live in an older home near Church of St Mary the Virgin, the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself.

Before you book any roof surveyor

  • What exactly goes into their report
  • Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
  • Whether the inside of the roof is included
  • Their report turnaround times

What a good roof survey covers

Honest limits

No survey can tell you everything, and it is better to know them up front. Bear these in mind:

  • Whether your insurer will pay the claim
  • What your policy covers, which depends on its wording
  • Negotiating a claim settlement

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will suggest the right survey before you book. What a survey covers and does not.

Storm damage roof reports in West Horsley: local notes

With Hatchlands Park about 1.6 miles south-west, West Horsley sits in an area with a long building history. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Older houses across Surrey often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging. A few of Surrey’s oldest buildings have heavy Horsham stone slab roofs. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in.

If you let a flat or house near Horsley station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it. Homes near green spaces such as The Forest and the Highlands can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.
