Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Brick Hill

A thermal survey isn’t a quick fix for every roof problem. It shows surface temperature, and things like sun, shade, reflections and wind all affect the readings. That’s why we check findings with moisture readings and a close visual inspection. The report is clear about what the images show and what they do not. Where something cannot be confirmed, we say what would help next. We survey commercial roofs, pitched roof slopes and ceilings below the roof, and people most often book us about damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys and moisture around outlets and upstands.

Older buildings in small places like Brick Hill may be listed or in a conservation area. A look from the air or with a thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

What we’re asked to look at in Brick Hill

Some defects simply can’t be seen with the eye. Wet insulation, gaps in insulation and heat loss are often invisible from outside. Thermal imaging gives us another way to look for them.

Typical things we’re asked to look at include:

  • Heat escaping through the roof
  • Moisture around outlets and upstands
  • Water that travels before it shows
  • Damp patches with no obvious cause

Anyone responsible for a site like Valley End CofE Infant School will know that a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

What to check before booking

  • What exactly goes into their report
  • Their insurance cover
  • Whether the roof space is looked at, where there is one
  • Which limits apply to the survey

FAQs for Brick Hill

Is Brick Hill in the area you cover?

We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Is my home in Brick Hill listed or in a conservation area?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Is thermal imaging useful on pitched roofs?

It can be useful, though pitched roofs are usually harder to read. Slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s below, so we combine it with an inspection from the loft where there’s safe access.

How many surveys have you done?

We’ve been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

We are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Where it helps and it’s safe, yes. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules. We are a CAA-registered drone operator.

Will you photograph what you find?

Yes. Photos are taken throughout the survey, and the report uses them to show each finding.

Why get it checked now?

Heat lost through a roof costs money every winter. Thermal images can show where insulation is missing or has slipped, so you know where to put things right. For an older or listed building in a place like Brick Hill, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.

A Basic Survey starts from £150, with VAT included. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, both including VAT. You’ll know the price for your survey before booking.

Different roofs, different checks

Loft insulation

Loft insulation is easily disturbed when people store things or run cables. Thermal images can show where it has been pushed aside.

Parapets, valleys and junctions

Problems where roof slopes and walls meet are often hidden. We combine a close visual check with the thermal images.

The survey, step by step

We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available, including by drone where it’s applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Somewhere like Brick Hill needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.

  1. We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
  2. The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
  4. Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
  5. Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.

Preparing for the visit

  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent
  • Leave side gates unlocked

Advice

What this survey can’t tell you

It is useful to know what a survey will not do before you book:

  • Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
  • A structural engineer’s assessment
  • What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will tell you before you book. What our survey covers.

Roofs we survey in Brick Hill

  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Loft conversions
  • Commercial roofs
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Flat roofs

Checking the roof from ground level

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date.

It’s useful to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Share it with us as you book and it will help the survey.

Drones, thermal imaging and Brick Hill roofs

In Surrey, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, with tile-hanging on many upper walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. If the drone is used for your survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.

If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near Church of St Saviour, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that is where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps. Botleys Mansion lies about 4 miles east, so building around Brick Hill goes back a long way. For older roofs nearby, a look from above or with a thermal imager is a hands-off way to check condition.
