A thermal camera can help when the cause of damp isn’t obvious. Water can travel some distance under a roof covering before it shows inside, and the camera can show patterns that help us follow it. The images are used alongside a visual inspection and moisture readings, so the findings don’t rely on the camera alone. If you’re worried about damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys and ceilings that feel colder in places, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

Villages like Britwell Salome often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

The survey, step by step

Every roof is different, but as a rough guide the survey takes an hour or two at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. You are welcome to ask questions while we are there. Older rural homes like those around Britwell Salome can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely.

  1. First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there is safe access, in the loft.
  4. We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
  5. Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.

Before the survey

  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
  • Find any records of previous roof work
  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed

Advice

Common questions in Britwell Salome

Is Britwell Salome in the area you cover?

Yes, Britwell Salome is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Britwell Salome as anywhere else.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Britwell Salome?

We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

Can a thermal camera see water?

Thermal imaging shows temperature rather than water. Wet insulation holds heat longer than dry, so it can stand out, but we check each finding with moisture readings.

How long will you be at the property?

Time on site depends on the roof; most visits take about 1–2 hours for most houses, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. The written report follows by email.

What does the report include?

A written report with photographs, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations, in order of urgency where relevant. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

It depends on what we need to see. For inside areas and the roof space, someone has to give us access, while outside access can be discussed when booking.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day, which suits people who work during the week. Just say which days work for you.

When to book a survey in Britwell Salome

Not every roof problem shows on the surface. Wet insulation, gaps in insulation and heat loss are frequently invisible from outside. Thermal imaging gives us another way to look for them.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Damp patches with no obvious cause
  • Missing or slipped insulation
  • Heat escaping through the roof
  • Damp around roof outlets and upstands

Adwell House lies about 4.3 miles north-east, so building around Britwell Salome goes back a long way. Photos from the air and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What the report includes, and whether it has photos
  • Their drone registration, if they fly one
  • Which limits apply to the survey
  • How long the report takes to arrive

What to expect from a roof survey

Airspace, weather and Britwell Salome roofs

West Oxfordshire’s older buildings often carry Cotswold stone slates, and a few villages in the county keep their thatch. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. If your survey includes the drone, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.

For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Nicholas, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Take a building like Icknield Community College: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Useful tips for Britwell Salome property owners

Getting the most from a thermal roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Tips:

  • Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
  • Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected
  • Keep a record of when stains appear
  • Use the report as a baseline for later checks

Once we have been, the thermal images, photos and readings go into a single report. Each image is explained in plain words, alongside what we recommend. Premium reports are sent the same day.

Clear outlets and gutters regularly, so water doesn’t sit on the roof. Less standing water means less chance of it getting under the covering.
