About our thermal roof survey in Hensting
Your report sets out the thermal images alongside ordinary photos, so it’s easy to see which part of the roof each one shows. Each one comes with an explanation, the moisture readings and our recommendation. With a Premium Survey, the report reaches you the same day. You can talk the findings through with us at the in-person consultation. A follow-up 12 months later is included too. We are often asked to look into damp patches with no obvious cause and heat escaping through the roof, on flat roofs, ceilings below the roof and loft conversions.
Somewhere as small as Hensting, older roofs are frequently steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Weather and airspace are checked ahead of the visit. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Questions from Hensting
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Hensting?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Is Hensting within the area you cover?
Yes, Hensting is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.
Is thermal imaging included in your surveys?
Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. That also includes a full inspection, a drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and a same-day report.
Does the report include photos?
Yes. Photos are part of every report, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.
How long does the survey take?
That depends on the size and shape of the roof; most visits take between one and two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. The report is sent afterwards by email.
Can thermal imaging show missing insulation?
The camera can point to heat loss and gaps in insulation. The survey isn’t an energy rating or a heat loss calculation, but the images show where improvements may help.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Not unless it is safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where applicable, a drone, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.
Tips from our surveys
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:
- Move stored items away from the loft hatch
- Do not climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
- Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
- Keep a record of when stains appear
You can pass the report to a roofer so they can see where the problem areas seem to be. Because the images are paired with photos, it is easy to find each area on the roof.
Watch for new damp patches on ceilings beneath the roof. Catching a leak early stops insulation getting soaked.
Can I check my roof myself?
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
It is useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when you book, as it helps us focus the survey.
For landlords and managing agents
Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on, photographs included.
Letting agents can arrange access with tenants, at a time agreed in advance. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, which helps when tenants work during the week.
What happens if roof problems are left?
Thermal images can suggest the extent of wet areas without cutting into the roof. It helps when deciding whether to patch an area or replace the roof. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Hensting, driving rain gets into any weakness, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.
Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

Roof by roof
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
Felt and asphalt roofs frequently show wet areas as patches that differ from the rest. We check those patches with moisture readings.
Loft insulation
Insulation frequently gets moved during work in the loft. The camera can show where it no longer covers the ceiling.

What happens on the day
On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that is worrying you. We then inspect everything that can be seen safely, from the ground, from windows, in the loft space and by drone where it applies. Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. In a small place like Hensting, access is usually the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
Before we arrive
- Let us know where we can park nearby
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
- If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in
Book a survey
Most bookings start with a short call: phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will ask a few questions about the roof. You’ll have a price before anything is arranged.
Related advice
Drones, thermal imaging and Hensting roofs
A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that’s where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. If your home is older, it’s worth knowing whether it is listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas.
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of the Holy Trinity, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help. Whatever the street in Hensting, a roof costs least to look after when faults are caught early.
