Thermal roof survey in Little Somborne: what you get
A thermal imaging roof survey uses a thermal camera to show differences in surface temperature across a roof. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or places where heat is getting out. The camera doesn’t see water itself, so we check what it shows with moisture readings. It comes as part of our Premium Survey, from £400. Conditions on the day affect the results, and the report explains how. If you’ve noticed patches of heat loss across the roof and thin or uneven insulation in the roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Somewhere as small as Little Somborne, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from ground level. Weather and airspace are checked before the visit. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
We write the report in plain English, so you do not need to be a roofer to follow it. Photographs show what each point refers to, with the urgent items made clear.

What this survey cannot tell you
A survey is a close look at the roof, but it can’t do everything. Its limits include:
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
- A formal energy assessment
- Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What we look at
- Flat roofs
- Ceilings below the roof
- Loft conversions
- Insulated roof spaces
- Pitched roof slopes
- Commercial roofs
What happens on the day
We check the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there is safe access, from inside the loft space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. The whole visit typically takes about 1–2 hours at a typical home; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Older roofs in small places like Little Somborne can have low, tight loft spaces, so it helps to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it’s safe.
- We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there’s safe access, in the loft.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
Preparing for the visit
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch

Tips from our surveys
Getting the most from a thermal roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:
- Move stored items away from the loft hatch
- Keep a record of when stains appear
- Talk to us about the weather when booking
- Don’t climb onto the roof to look for leaks yourself
If you are buying, the report gives you specific points to raise with the seller or agent. What you do with it is up to you, whether that is asking for work or discussing the price.
Check that loft insulation is laid evenly and hasn’t been pushed aside. Insulation is frequently moved when people work in the roof space.
Questions from Little Somborne
Is Little Somborne in the area you cover?
Yes, Little Somborne is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs.
How do I find out if my home in Little Somborne is listed?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
What conditions are best for thermal imaging?
The results depend on the weather. Dry, calm weather after some sun gives the best chance of clear images. Our report notes the conditions and how they affected the findings.
Do I need to be at home?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
What does the report include?
It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos. Points are put with the most urgent first where relevant.
What happens next?
You’ll get the report by email. With Standard there’s a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Just say which days work for you.

Drones, thermal imaging and Little Somborne roofs
An older home may be listed, or stand in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent. Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail.
In and around Little Somborne, as anywhere, a roof is easiest to deal with when its problems are found early. The streets around a church like All Saints Church are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

What we look for on each type of roof
Felt and asphalt flat roofs
Water under felt or asphalt can stay hidden for years. The camera can give clues to where it is sitting, when the conditions allow.
Pitched slate and tile roofs
Slate and tile roofs are often harder to read with a thermal camera, because of the air space beneath. We combine the images with an inspection from the loft where there is safe access.
