Drones, thermal imaging and Lydd-on-Sea roofs
Lydd-on-Sea is within about 1 mile of the coast, and wind off the sea can be strong. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material, so the council is the place to ask.
The streets around a church such as St Peter's are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

How a thermal roof survey works in Lydd-on-Sea
A thermal survey can point to places where heat is escaping through the roof. Missing or slipped insulation and gaps at the eaves frequently show up as temperature differences. It works best when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. The report shows the images and explains what they may mean. We don’t give energy ratings or heat loss calculations. Typical surveys look at damp around chimneys and parapets and water that travels before it shows, across loft conversions, commercial roofs and insulated roof spaces.
Villages like Lydd-on-Sea often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
We write the report in plain English, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Each point is backed by a photo where possible, and recommendations are put by urgency where it matters.

When to book a survey in Lydd-on-Sea
After a repair, some owners want to know whether the roof has dried out. Thermal images and moisture readings can suggest whether moisture is still trapped, given suitable conditions on the day.
We’re often asked to look at:
- Possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering
- Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
- Damp around chimneys and parapets
- Water that travels before it shows
Take a building like Greatstone Primary School: a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
Before booking anyone
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
- When you will get the report
- Whether you get a written report with photos

FAQs for Lydd-on-Sea
Is Lydd-on-Sea within the area you cover?
Yes, we do. Our area covers London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.
Is my home in Lydd-on-Sea listed or in a conservation area?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
Will you walk on the roof?
Not unless it’s safe. Safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where it applies cover most of what’s needed, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.
Will the survey show heat loss through my roof?
Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. We look from the loft as well, where there’s safe access.
How many surveys have you done?
We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.
What happens after the survey?
The report arrives by email. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.
Different roofs, different checks
GRP fibreglass roofs
Glossy GRP can reflect heat. We allow for reflections and confirm findings with moisture readings.
Loft insulation
In the loft space, the camera can pick up gaps and thin areas of insulation. We inspect the loft where it can be reached safely.
The survey, step by step
After the inspection, everything we found is written up as a photo-illustrated written report, emailed to you. As for time on site, it usually takes about 1–2 hours at a typical home, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Older roofs in small places like Lydd-on-Sea can have low, tight loft spaces, so it helps to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
Getting ready for the survey
- Keep pets in another room
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
Booking a survey
Buyers should book once an offer has been accepted, so you have the findings in time to act on them before you exchange. Otherwise, simply ring 07833 053749 or send us an email whenever suits you.
Advice
What happens if roof problems are left?
A poorly insulated roof loses heat year after year. Thermal images can show where insulation is missing or has slipped, so you know where to put things right. In a small place like Lydd-on-Sea, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
Every price we give includes VAT. Our price is from £400, including VAT. We confirm the price for the job before booking.
