Thermal roof survey in Portchester: what you get
A thermal imaging roof survey uses a thermal camera to show differences in surface temperature across a roof. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or places where heat is getting out. The camera doesn’t see water itself, so findings are checked with moisture readings. It comes as part of our Premium Survey, from £400. Conditions on the day affect the results, and the report explains how. We survey flat roofs, ceilings below the roof and commercial roofs, and the problems we are asked to look at most are moisture around outlets and upstands and missing or slipped insulation.
Around Portchester, older homes can have thin loft insulation and later additions with roofs of their own. A thermal image can show where heat is escaping or where moisture may be trapped, and drone photos show the roof surfaces themselves. Anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter. Results depend on the weather, so the visit is planned around the forecast.
You receive the findings by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Different roofs, different checks
GRP fibreglass roofs
Water under a GRP roof can reach the timber deck. The camera can help show where to look.
Single-ply and EPDM roofs
Many single-ply and EPDM roofs sit on insulation boards. Wet boards can show as temperature differences on the images.
How we price thermal roof surveys
Several things affect the price of a survey:
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
- The size of the roof
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before you book.
What we need to know
These details help when you get in touch:
- Your timetable, like an exchange date
- Where the property is, with the postcode
- Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
A quick phone call is normally the easiest start: phone 07833 053749 or email us. You’ll have a price before anything is arranged.
What we do, step by step
After the inspection, everything we found is written up as a written report with photos. As for time on site, it typically takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. A visit to a smaller place like Portchester is no different on the day: we look from ground level, from windows, from the loft and from the roof where it is safe. It is useful to show us anything you’ve already noticed.
- You tell us about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
- We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
- You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.
Before the survey
- Leave side gates unlocked
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- If you are buying, let the agent know when we are coming

Questions from Portchester
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Portchester?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Is Portchester within the area you cover?
Yes, Portchester is covered. We work right across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.
What does a thermal roof survey show?
It records surface temperature across the roof. Unusual patterns can point to trapped water, gaps in insulation or heat escaping, which we then check with moisture readings.
Does the report include photos?
Yes. Photos are taken throughout the survey, and the report uses them to show each finding alongside our recommendations.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.
Do I need to be at home?
Someone needs to let us in if we are looking inside or in the loft. We will talk about access when you book.
How soon will I get the report?
Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. All of them come by email, ready to forward.
Why it is worth a survey now in Portchester
A poorly insulated roof loses heat year after year. The camera can point to gaps and thin areas in the insulation, so improvements can go where they’re needed. Arranging work in a smaller place like Portchester is easier with notice than in an emergency. Knowing early gives you time to get the right people in.
To find out what your survey will cost, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and let us know about the roof. We’ll confirm the figure before booking.

Flying and imaging in Portchester
Portchester is within about 1 mile of the coast. Clear thermal results need a dry roof and little wind after a sunny day, so the date depends on the forecast. If the drone is used for your survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
For businesses in and around places such as Fareham Shopping Centre, large commercial roofs are often easiest to see from above or with a thermal imager. If you live in an older home near Church of St Mary, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.
Portchester is about 3 miles north-east of Gosport, in Hampshire. Whether the building in Portchester is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, we can survey the roof on a weekday or at the weekend. We cover towns and villages across Hampshire, large and small.

Do you need a thermal roof survey in Portchester?
Once a leak has been fixed, people frequently ask whether the roof is still wet. A thermal survey with moisture readings can show whether wet areas remain, given suitable conditions on the day.
People usually book a survey after spotting one of these:
- Stains that keep coming back
- Cold areas below the roof
- Missing or slipped insulation
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
If you look after a building like Castle Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
What to check before booking
- Their insurance cover
- Whether the roof space is looked at, where there is one
- What exactly goes into their report
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
Can I check my roof myself?
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
