Flying and imaging in Puddledock

The wider area around Puddledock has a long history of building, with Chartwell about 0.6 miles north-west. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Alongside Victorian and Edwardian terraces, outer London has a great many interwar semis, frequently with hipped roofs of clay or concrete tiles. On a semi of that age, the small roofs over the bays, the hip tiles and any later dormer each need their own look. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.

Parking in Puddledock, as in most of London, takes a little planning: let us know about permits, visitor bays or off-street space as you book.

Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Puddledock

Thermal imaging is useful when a damp patch has no clear cause. Water can travel some distance under a roof covering before it shows inside, and the camera can show patterns that help us follow it. The images are used alongside a visual inspection and moisture readings, so no conclusion rests on one method alone. We survey pitched roof slopes, flat roofs and loft conversions, and common reasons people get in touch are damp around roof outlets and upstands and patches of heat loss across the roof.

London’s roofs are often hard to see from the street: valley gutters behind parapets, dormers and flat-roofed rear additions. Drone photos and thermal images can show parts of a roof that are hard to reach safely. Weather on the day decides whether it goes ahead, in Puddledock as anywhere. What a thermal image shows is temperature, so anything that looks like moisture is checked with a meter.

Findings are set out part by part, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, with a note and a photo for each point. You will see the good as well as the bad.

Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Puddledock

Flat roofs that have leaked for a while can have wet insulation under the covering. Owners want to know how far it has spread before deciding what to do. Thermal images and moisture readings together can show the likely extent.

A survey can pick up problems such as:

  • Cold areas below the roof
  • Possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering
  • Missing or slipped insulation
  • Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions

For an older house near a landmark like Holy Trinity Church, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Questions from Puddledock

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Puddledock?

Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather, and the rest of the survey doesn’t depend on the drone.

Is parking a problem for a survey in Puddledock?

It depends on the street. Where there are permit zones, a visitor permit or nearby pay-and-display bay works well, and a driveway is even better.

What can thermal imaging tell me about my roof?

The camera records how the surface temperature varies. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat loss. We check what it shows with moisture readings.

How soon will I get the report?

Each package has its own report time. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. If you have a deadline, like an exchange date, let us know when you book.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Let us know which days suit you when you book.

How long is the visit?

Time on site depends on the roof; most visits take between one and two hours on an ordinary house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. The written report follows by email.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.

Practical tips

There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:

  • Clear a path to the loft hatch before we arrive
  • Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
  • Talk to us about the weather when booking
  • Note where damp appears and after what weather

Buyers can use the findings when talking to the seller or agent. What you do with it is up to you, whether that’s asking for work or discussing the price.

Check loft insulation covers the whole area and hasn’t been disturbed. Insulation is frequently moved when people work in the loft space.

What we look for on each type of roof

GRP fibreglass roofs

Cracks in GRP can let water into the boards beneath. We combine a visual check of cracks with the thermal images around them.

Parapets, valleys and junctions

Water often gets in where roofs meet walls, parapets or valley gutters. Thermal imaging can help show damp patterns around them.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Puddledock

Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it when booking and we’ll plan the survey around it.

Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client.

What happens on the day

When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you need to know. After that, we check everything we can see safely. Most surveys take about 1–2 hours for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. Surveys in Puddledock can be booked for any day of the week. London parking is frequently by permit or pay-and-display, so it’s useful to know what’s near you, and to clear a path to the loft hatch. Upstairs rooms at the back are useful too, as they often give the best view of a rear addition.

  1. You let us know about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
  2. We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
  3. We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
  4. Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
  5. You get the report the same day, with an in-person consultation to follow.

Preparing for the visit

  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • If you’re buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch

Advice

Leave it or get it looked at?

Wet insulation under a flat roof does not dry out on its own while the covering stays on. Over time, it insulates less well and can harm the deck. Finding the wet areas sooner keeps the work smaller. A hidden valley or parapet gutter on a London house can hold water for weeks before anyone notices. By the time a ceiling stains, the timbers underneath may have been wet for a while.

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. You will know the figure before booking.
